It’s the morning of the 1st of September and you groggily open the blinds- was that a leaf that just fell from the tree? An ORANGE leaf?
The leaf has inspired you. Autumn’s back! You make immediate plans for the new season. You will start reading poetry. You will go for long walks in the park. You WILL spend too much money on cute pumpkin themed drinks. Then you pause- what have you forgotten? The answer of course, lies in your wardrobe. Its your old red jumper you haven’t worn in months- and it’s calling your name.
What is it about autumn clothes which inspire such nostalgia? Why is it that old scraggly jumper that you always go back to, why is it those leathery brown boots that pinch your toes that you always delight the most at putting on? The answers are few and many.
- It’s romantic asf!
Countless movies prove this as less of an opinion and more of a well supported fact. When Harry met Sally is a classic 80s example, (“she had great hair, he had terrible hair”- one anonymous Letterboxed user) with its bright red turtlenecks, long trench coats and diverse colour palettes matching the gorgeous backdrop of autumnal New York. The rainy gloom of the autumn months, as well as the array of sunset colours, really amplify the heartfelt tenderness Harry and Sally feel towards each other in the film as they meet and meet again. Now ask yourself the question, would the film really feel the same if Harry was in a pair of shorts and sandals and Sally was in a bikini? Sally’s smart but casual dress really shows the maturity of her character- while looking great on screen, I have one conclusion to make here: ‘I’ll have what she’s having!’
2) It’s versatile
When it comes to clothes, most people either gravitate towards darker or lighter tones but of course, some may also choose colour tones based on their colour analysis. Every season has its signatures, spring’s pastel greens and pinks, summer’s teal blues and beachy corals, winter’s pine needle greens and velvet reds- but those tend to be either light OR dark, autumn is the best season for experimentation, hands down. A good example lies in the classic autumn jacket. Dark brown is just as popular as light brown, with dark brown boots being just as popular as light brown boots. Both look good, both are popular- what’s the secret? Well, isn’t it quite fitting for the season where leaves can be any colour? If I were to choose any colour analysis palette, I’d without a doubt choose autumn!
3) BOOTS BOOTS BOOTS!
Boots. What more is there to say? They’re the comfier cousin of heels (ideal for a night out where you need to walk ANYWHERE, trapsing around Glasgow in a pair of heels I can tell you, is not for the blister prone) they can be dressed up for a clubbing night out in the central or dressed down for a casual coffee run in the west end, and they come in a whole range of sizes and shapes. Heeled boots? Super classy, great with a trench coat of any size. Flat brown boots? Adorable with knee high socks (which provide the additional bonus of keeping your legs super warm and cozy in the colder months). Plus, what makes you feel more confident than a new, shiny pair of boots. They’ll make your outfits cuter, your height (partially) taller and your confidence higher. As Nancy said, ‘these boots are made for walkin.’
4) It’s fun!
One word, HALLOWEEN. Two words that are better= HALLOWEEN COSTUMES. This is undoubtably one of the best (if not slightly stressful) fashion moments of autumn. When else do you get the opportunity to dress up like Freddy Mercury on the subway? The answer is: none. Costumes are also a fun way to make cute memories with friends or partners by matching them, and there’s tons of options! You can go as characters from your favourite movie, the classic Halloween monsters, or one of you can go as a martini glass and the other an olive (rubbish for the olive). At the end of the day, your wardrobe will be filled with all sorts of contraband, from feather boas to that scabby neon pink bob wig- the kind of stuff you KNOW you should throw out but every time you do, that one photo in your camera roll says, ‘please don’t forget the good times we had together.‘ Clothes are memories, but Halloween costumes are much more than that- Halloween costumes are experiences.
