Why Gettysburg is the Best Liberal Arts School in Pennsylvania

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Gettysburg chapter.

Gettysburg College offers countless opportunities to its students through rigorous academics as well as countless programs, clubs, and organizations to get involved in that go beyond the classroom. There is no shortage of small liberal arts schools in Pennsylvania, but here is why Gettysburg is the very best.

Global Education

Creating an understanding of diversity and broadening students’ perspectives is an integral part of a Gettysburg College education. Not only is this seen in the school’s requirement for students to complete understanding diversity course requirements, but also in the school’s emphasis on study abroad.

According to the 2016 Open Doors Report on International Education Exchange, Gettysburg ranks second in the U.S. and first in Pennsylvania liberal arts schools for mid-length study abroad experiences.

3 out of 5 Gettysburg students will spend at least one semester abroad. Foreign education and exploration help shape Gettysburg students into future global leaders.

Sustainability

From our single stream recycling program to the Painted Turtle Farm to our newer printing decrease initiatives, Gettysburg is taking more and more innovative steps towards sustainability each year: one of the newest being the new structure of Servo—trayless dining decreases the water that has to be used to wash said trays, as well as encourages students to take less food at the start of their meal, thus cutting down on wasted food.

Professors

There is nothing like the strong connections between Gettysburg College students and professors. Small classes make for a lot of one-on-one time, forming bonds that last well beyond one semester (and probably beyond 4 years). Academic conversations between students and professors transcend what happens in the classroom, from student-assisted research to meeting during lunch for a chat or even having tea on the weekend to discuss courses. There are more personal connections as well; professors may invite students over for dinner, or students may go to a professor’s house to help them move a piano. We are all one community here at Gettysburg College.

History

Gettysburg College is proud of its town and its history—something that can be seen throughout the atmosphere of the campus. From clever club names such as Four Scores (the co-ed acapella group) and Zouave (the lyrical dance group) to the ghost stories that the whole campus knows to the reading of the Gettysburg Address at the First Year Walk, no one forgets the rich background of our namesake town.

Tradition

Gettysburg traditions make for the best memories. Servo Thanksgiving with your friends and professors, intense Wingo nights, Snowball, Burgburst…the list goes on and on.

Gettysburg Great People

No matter where you go on campus, you will see students smiling and waving as they pass each other on their walks to class. In classrooms, you will hear friendly and mentally stimulating conversations even before the professor begins to speak. We are involved; we are passionate; we are Gettysburg Great.

We love to poke fun at our sister chapter, HC Dickinson. Check out their site to see why they (foolishly) think Dickinson is the best.

English Education major at Gettysburg College. My friends hate me for correcting their grammar, but I know they secretly appreciate it.
