Vagina Monologues: A New Experience

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Gettysburg chapter.

The Vagina Monologues is a play written by Eve Ensler. Ensler, seeking inspiration for the play, interviewed different women about their feelings about womanhood and all of the experiences that come with being female–talk of vaginas and periods included. It was their responses and their stories that both led to the creation of the monologues. Every year, Gettysburg College students perform them; this year was no different, the proceeds of the show going to Survivors, Inc.

This was my first time seeing the Vagina Monologues, and it was especially exciting because I was a member of the cast. The Vagina Monologues are a bit odd in the way that they work. Everyone is assigned a monologue, but no one hears the entire show until the first night. Backstage is filled with an amazing excitement; everyone is happy to be there. Each member of the cast sits around a huge table and the room is filled with talking and laughter as we all get to know each other. When the monologues finally begin, each has an original twist. The words may be the same, but the show is different from year to year, even day to day. Standing on stage, you are with and surrounded by other girls who want you to succeed and to get the message of your monologue across. This year was special, as a girl performed an original monologue at the end of the show. I know that I cannot wait until I am able to participate again next year.

The Vagina Monologues was a very different event for me, but something that I really enjoyed. I met many girls, who I now consider my friends. I was able to perform a monologue on stage two nights in a row, and enjoy others as well. Most of all, I was able to spend time with other girls and further my understanding of what it means to have a vagina, as well as, the meaning of being a woman.
