The Many Facets of Donald Trump’s Election

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Gettysburg chapter.

You know why I hate being a republic? Why I hate that our vote doesn’t actually count? Because if we were purely going off the popular vote, then Hillary Rodham Clinton would have been our first woman president. She would have been the woman that stopped the racist, sexist, Islamophobic, intolerant, bigoted Donald Drumpf. We wouldn’t have a perfect first female president, but we would have had someone that Putin wants to be friends with. We wouldn’t have a man that wants to build a wall to keep Mexicans out of our nation and wants Mexico to pay for the trouble. We wouldn’t have a man that wants to grab women by the pussy, and can get away with it by calling it “locker room talk”. We wouldn’t have a man that is confirmed to be an anti-LGBT president. We wouldn’t have a man that Jimmy Fallon and SNL brought onto their shows and treated like a joke rather than as a threat. We wouldn’t have a man that the American people have just accepted for all of his hatred.

The 11,000 people who wrote in Harambe are responsible for this presidency.

The people who chose not to vote because it wouldn’t affect them are responsible for this presidency.

The electoral college, which claims that Drumpf is our president despite popular vote saying that Clinton should have won, is responsible for this presidency.

An over two hundred year policy that was created when the majority of the nation was not educated, and allowed the educated and the passionate to make the decisions for the greater nation, which has now become corrupt with power and has proved itself to not be representative of our nation twice in the past two decades, is responsible for this presidency.

The people who think that we’re in a “post-racial society” just because we had a black president are responsible for this presidency, especially considering Van Jones’ well-put comment about the “whitelash against a changing country.”

If we had just taken this election seriously for once, and not condemned Clinton for emails but allowed Drumpf to get away with all of his hatred, we wouldn’t have to consider that our nation is just as racist, sexist, and Islamophobic as our newly elected president.
