Emma Watson’s Eco-Friendly Met Gala Gown

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Gettysburg chapter.

Monday, May 2nd, was New York City’s Met Gala (the place to be for anyone who’s anyone in the fashion world). This year’s theme was “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology”, so, obviously, there were some serious forward-thinking ensembles.

One star in particular, however, interpreted this in a sense of clothing production and its environmental impact. The resulting outfit was not only innovative, but environmentally sustainable as well.

The responsible party? None other than Emma Watson.

As if we needed more of a reason to love her.

Watson’s gorgeous 5-piece, black-and-white, off-the-shoulder gown with pants underneath was made with one very unique material: recycled plastic water bottles.

Not one of the usuals on the list of high-end apparel textiles.

Watson collaborated with Calvin Klein and Eco Age to create this ensemble. Every aspect of the outfit was made with sustainability in mind.

The three different fabrics that compose the body of the gown are all woven with yarn made out of repurposed plastic water bottles.

The zippers are made out of recycled materials.

The inner bustier is made out of organic cotton (Watson herself pointed out that conventional cotton uses more chemicals than any of the world’ other crops and that organic cotton is, therefore, better for the environment and anyone in the cotton industry).

The lining is made out of organic silk.

Watson also stated that she intends on repurposing this repurposed gown: “The trousers can be worn on their own, as can the bustier, the train can be used for a future red carpet look… I’m looking forward to experimenting with this. Truly beautiful things should be worn again and again and again. ‪#‎30wears‬”

Thank you, Emma, for showing us all (yet again) how to think creatively to make a positive impact on our world. And of course, how gorgeous and perfect you are.
