Logan is the epitome of eccentricity, the mother of compassionate late-night text messages, the khaleesi of pugs, and the stealer of hearts everywhere. Our friendship, a platonic love story to transcend time and fine literature, began on a late September evening in 2014, a week or so after freshman move-in day. An eager line extended out of our dining center’s doors as a close friend and I waited for the cheesy company of “Midnight Madness” mozzarella sticks, a favorite tradition of Gettysburg College students. I was, I assume, visibly uncomfortable around the towering heads of inebriated upperclassmen and the lanyard-jeweled necks of my fellow first years; crowds have never been my element, but hey, a girl needs her mozz sticks.
I found Logan through one unknown student’s homophobic remark, a quote which I haven’t the heart to recite. I grumbled a little to a friend of mine, wishing not only that I had the confidence to speak up, but that people would cease to say such nasty slurs. A tawny-haired girl, soon to become my best friend, looked over with a sympathetic smile. “I hear it all the time. I’m a lil’ gay. It sucks.”
It was the beginning of a beautiful bond.
