What its really like to be an art student

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Georgia Southern chapter.

What comes to mind when you think of a stereotypicalart student? I was having this conversation with some of my co-workers the other day. One of them was going on to talk about how she can easily point out the SCAD art students when she’s people watching in Savannah. They all have this “hipster” aesthetic: high-waisted pants, ridiculous amounts of black, cardigans, over winged eye lids, posted up on a wall, while smoking a cigarette. Meanwhile, my graphic design behind is just sitting there like you guys remember that I’m an art student right?

I guess I don’t help my cause too much because even though they don’t see me in regular clothes too much, I wear my work pants above my waist, my work shirt tucked in, and non-prescription glasses just for the look.

There seems to be disconnect between the art department and the rest of the school. I’m sure many of you are little curious about what goes on at Betty Foy Art Department. First things first, although some of us fit in it more than others there is no stereotypical art student. We all bring our own unique personalities and styles and together make a beautiful diverse community. We have different interests and career paths that range all the way from drawing to interior design to printmaking, everything in between and so much more. A lot of us carry a mac laptop around and others carry around the huge black portfolio bag everywhere. We read books, play sports, and have interest outside of our major, but at the end of the day despite the frustrations, trials, and tribulations we love what we do. And some people like me have a tiny little hipster tucked away in the back of the mind.
