Reasons Why Taking an “L” is Essential

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Georgia Southern chapter.

A time will come when you realize you needed something, perhaps, bad to happen to allow you to progress to better. College is the perfect time for incidents like this to come into play. The mistakes or setbacks you make will encounter are bound to scope you into a better person. You will not realize how great of a role the L, as many of us call it, plays in your life until after it happens. It’s kind of like when you finally get over your ex, and think “What the heck was I thinking to even date such a person?” Below are a couple reasons why, if you feel like you have failed at something, are experiencing a setback, or going through times, they’re all essential.

  •  Downtime

Deeper L’s tend to come with something we know as the “downtime.” Usually a period of time when we rather be secluded, focus on ourselves, and think things through. We even start posting quotes on Twitter and Instagram lol. The downtime you experience after something doesn’t work in your favorite is probably the most crucial time to begin working towards better. Downtime allows us to realize maybe our own problems, or even things that we should fix about ourselves. This time period even allows for us to recognize our true friends!

  • The Road Won’t Always Be Easy

Many times we become SO accustomed to the norm that we find ourselves doing the bare minimum rather than doing things at the best of our ability. An L, honestly gives us a push to do better! It allows us to think, “I don’t want something like this to happen again,” or maybe “I want to do better than before!” Use your L as motivation.

  • Strengthen Your Faith

Whenever I’m going through something, I automatically gain the faith that I will be able to get through this situation someway or somehow. I’m sure I’m not the only one. The feeling of actually “getting over” a situation is the absolute best. It allows for one to believe that storms won’t always last.

  • You Live and Learn

This is probably the most important of them all, everything is a learning experience! College is the time to find yourself, learn what is and is not for you, and much more. Things happen: you will make a bad grade or so, you will get into sticky situations, and you will learn from every single one of them. Sure you may not learn the first or maybe even the fifth time, heck it doesn’t even matter about the number of times, it’s all about the lesson you’ve learned in the very end!

With this being said, we are all taking a bit of “L’s” left and right, but don’t let them bother you too much! Be better than what brought you down! Come out of the situation better than before each time, we are all going through daily struggles. If it helps, find a hobby to distract you when the going is getting tough. Whatever you do, don’t let a silly L stop you from becoming the best version of yourself!
