‘Tis the season to be Jolly! The holiday season has surrounded us and we are joyous in celebrating all of the food, family, friends, and affirmations that define the holiday season. But if your birthday falls within the season, I know that you probably have a complicated relationship with the holiday season. Here are some pros and cons of having a birthday during the holiday season:
CONS
- “We’ll celebrate your birthday for Christmas.” aka the most disrespectful thing I’ve ever heard. Why should my birthday be reduced to a sub-celebration of the greatest day of the year? I think I’m a good enough person to have my own day too. Plus, my birthday is literally a month before Christmas, come on now.
- Feeling guilty for celebrating as a child because your parents just spent money on the Thanksgiving dinner and are currently trying to buy Christmas gifts. I remember feeling as though I should just wait for Christmas to get my birthday gift, but by then it naturally didn’t feel as special.
- Not being able to have a party or hang out with friends because your birthday is too close or literally falls on Thanksgiving/Christmas/etc. My birthday is November 25th, which is the cusp of Thanksgiving week. Not to say that being with my family is bad on my birthday, but sometimes I wish I could just have the attention for a day, you know?
PROS
- Being a Thanksgiving/Christmas/etc. miracle! I was literally born on Thanksgiving, and so many people are always delighted to hear what a Thanksgiving miracle I was. Not sure what it’s like to have an average birth day story..
- Double the celebration! With a birthday in the holiday season it’s easy to feel like you’re celebrating an early Christmas because you get to #treat yourself right before Santa brings those gifts! Amazing.
- You never have to be in school on your birthday. Going to 8am algebra on your birthday? Have a huge chemistry bio to celebrate 19 years of life? CAN’T RELATE!
Remember to enjoy your birthday wherever it may fall. It’s the celebration of you, and you deserve to be celebrated!
