Natural Hair Praise: Why I Love My Hair

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Georgia Southern chapter.

Natural hair is bomb. End of discussion. No, but seriously, I get compliments on my hair but I also get strange looks, believe it or not. Some days I try to tame it, and on others I let it do what it wants. Most days you’ll see me walking around campus looking like I’m struggling with it in the wind and that’s because I am. No matter the trouble my hair causes or the unapproving looks I receive, I still love it regardless. Why? Because it’s mine.

I grew up getting relaxers, or “creamy crack” as it is infamously called, maybe starting around 4th or 5th grade. However, my last relaxer was at the start of my freshman year of high school in 2012, five years prior to now. It’s been a worthwhile journey, and I still have a long way to go. I love my hair because I can do whatever I want to it. I can wear it in a bun one day, a curly fro the next and bone-straight after that. It’s me in the most natural state there is. I used to be self-conscious of it, not wanting to make myself stick out, but now I honestly do not care. Accept me for me or don’t. By, Felicia.

The picture above is a back shot of my hair. I appreciate the kind words I get regarding my hair and sometimes I need that being that some days I’m really not feeling it. That’s why I always try to give compliments out loud instead of saying it in my head because you never know who needs to hear it. That’s off topic but it’s relevant in this case. Coming from disliking my hair to loving it was one of the best experiences I have had. I’ll be happy to encourage the next person who may be at odds with theirs.

Accept what it is, love it and flourish.
