How To Create A Legacy at Georgia Southern

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Georgia Southern chapter.

You’ve always heard your parents, teachers, and peers say getting involved is the most important aspect of college and building your resume. WRONG! …. Well to an extent. There is one sure fire way to beat just being involved. And, that aspect is creating a NEW student organization!

Looking to find out who you truly are during college? Starting a student organization will not only create a legacy on campus, it will also show you who you are. It will show you what your strengths and weaknesses, true hopes and dreams, and even who your true friends are. It truly it a great experience to have. This is the perfect time to go on a ledge. You don’t get judged for not knowing everyone first because everyone is young college students and secondly very few people know what goes into starting up something from scratch so they might not even notice.

Here at Georgia Southern there are over 200 student organizations, but even such a high number does not cater to the needs of all of the student population. For instance, at Georgia Southern we have the George-Anne which was for the long time the sole student media platform on campus. However, we wanted a chapter of Her Campus at Georgia Southern to really target the women on campus and give them an opportunity to shine in a new light. Same online medium now shared by two groups of people.

Also, it shows future employers that you have ambition. *Plays Wale “Ambitious Girl” in the background* Chartering your own student organization also shows you think out of the box. When there are already over 200 organizations on campus and you can think of a newer way to target different audiences, you are definitely projecting a positive image about your creativity.

With a campus of 20,000 students and growing it is difficult for just one student to get their voice heard. Starting an organization is a way to ensure that you are heard. It shows that more than one student feels a certain way. Once Georgia Southern can see that a group of students needs something they are more willing to help accommodate those needs.

Secondly, once you become a student organization you can also begin apply for funds from our Student Government Association. That way when you have funds you are able to create the changes you want to see on campus.

Don’t get us wrong it is not easy to start a student organization. Our helpful hint is to find someone you trust to go on the journey with. There are a lot of rules and regulations that a new and upcoming student organization will not know off hand. Trust the process, take a deep breath, and dive in.

A quote we like to remember is from the great Estee Lauder.
