Catch me outside, how bout dat?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Georgia Southern chapter.

I know that I am not the only one who has been caught up in this phrase coined from the little girl on Dr. Phil

If you have been living under a rock, let me explain. There was an episode of Dr. Phil, where this 13 years old named Danielle who was acting out of control and was talking about all the issues that she has been in regarding fighting her mom and how she is stealing cars, credit cards and fighting people. Soon enough her mom decided to bring onto the show. “Catch me outside, how bout dat” is a phrase she says when the audience starts laughing at her and she threatens them.

Now this phrase has gone viral, from remixes to choreography made and this child has been made into a “celebrity” overnight.

I guess it’s just me and how I see things, but there are a lot things wrong with this scenario.

One: Why is her mom not beating the breaks off of her? When Danielle was speaking about her mom fighting her, that made me think well the reason she is like that is because of her mom, but then I thought, the fact that you can’t control your child shows the type of authority that you have over her, or lack thereof. That’s embarrassing as hell and its irritating because a lot of these parents look like they are scared of their kids and they don’t know what to do. Parents need to take back that responsibility and let it be know what it is and what it’s not while they are younger so that never becomes a issues.

Two: Why do we promote this foolery? I’m not going lie, I probably say that phrase at least once a day, just to be funny of course, nothing serious. Think about it for a second. A 13 year old girl with an anger problem is worth going viral? This is what it takes to become an overnight sensation? “A couple of fights and an angry child? So being classy, educated and well manner just doesn’t work anymore?

Three: Why is considered a celebrity? Because that one hour of her on TV and them bam, she’s automatically on the same league as the some of the greats who used their “TALENT” to get the celebrity status that they have. Trust me when I say this girl is going to get her own reality show because the way television businesses are set up, quality is out the door. It’s more about what can sell and what the people are talking about. It’s sad, but it is true

Lastly: What is really the issue underlying under all of her anger. There has to be some sort of reason why this girl is who is. I think it’s deeper than just her mom not setting some sort of rules within their house and that’s what is crazy too because they won’t try to find out. They want this girl to be angry and with that they can use her anger to make a living and then once they get out into the real world, everyone will think that they are this person in real life and they won’t be able to portray their real selves
