5 Stereotypes About Black Women In The South

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Georgia Southern chapter.

So you’re on the phone with an old friend, and all of a sudden he starts joking about your country accent by mimicking you and saying, “Iza from the country and I date my cousins.” You’re probably thinking, “Oh no he didn’t just say that!” Well if that is what you’re thinking, just tell him next time he’ll be thinking about that dial tone he’s going to hear the next time he says something like that.

If you’ve heard any of that before, here are a few other stereotypes about women from the south that you have probably heard also.

1) We are all dumb and uneducated.

2) We’re all poor and on welfare.

3) We’re not career-oriented.

4) We live to fawn over men.

5) Our accent is distasteful.

No matter what stereotype is said about you, no matter who you are or where you are from, just remember to be you. Who cares what someone says about you! Especially to my southern women, continue to be you and most importantly be proud of your roots and where you come from. I think Beyonce said it best:

My daddy Alabama, Momma Louisiana, you mix that Negro with that Creole make a Texas bama / Earned all this money, but they never take the country out me / I got hot sauce in my bag swag!
