YA Author Spotlight: Rainbow Rowell

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Georgetown chapter.

Based on some of my previous articles, you may already be aware of the fact that I love young adult novels and read more books than is sometimes conceivable. One of my favorite authors is Rainbow Rowell. Her novels are amazing; they are well-written with superb characters who you are compelled to root for the entire time.

When Eleanor and Park was published in 2012, Rowell became a pillar in the young adult, YA, genre. If you haven’t read Eleanor and Park yet, you should. Written from alternating character viewpoints, the novel is set in the 1980s and follows Eleanor and Park in their everyday lives. When a wild redheaded girl needs a seat on the school bus, Park begrudgingly moves his belongings so she can sit down. This one moment acts as a catalyst for the pair to develop an unlikely friendship and romance. While I love fantastical stories and mythical realms, there is something beautiful and sweet about a tale pertaining to character development.

Her new adult novel, Fangirl, was just as fantastic. Fangirl has become quite well-known being the first book club choice for Tumblr and a National Novel Writing Month, NaNoWriMo, success story. What truly sets Rowell apart from other authors is her simple inclusion of details. The protagonist, Cath, writes fanfiction and throughout the novel, parts of her story act as chapter openings. Personally, I loved this element. I must not have been the only one to enjoy this secondary story because Rowell penned a beautiful magical tale entitled Carry On.

If you are interested in reading character driven stories instead of plot focused tales, Rainbow Rowell’s novels, Eleanor and Park, Fangirl, Carry On, and her adult novels, Landline, and Attachments, are worth checking out. She is also hysterical on Twitter. Rowell tweets about everything from the latest Sherlock premiere to Netflix, movies, novels, and other authors. Rainbow Rowell’s talent and personable disposition ranks her among my favorite writers.
