At the start of a new semester everyone is ready and excited to get back to their friends and their favorite spots. However a new semester is the perfect time to venture out. Once Hoya collegiettes™ get comfortable on the hilltop they have the amazing opportunity to venture off campus to find adventure.

So if you’ve already enjoyed Mexican food and margaritas at Los Cuates, shopped on M Street, and spent one too many nights at Rhino or Thirds, consider adding some new adventures to your bucket list.

1.  Go Kayaking on the Potomac
Before the weather gets too cold, take a Saturday afternoon and go kayaking on the Potomac. The crew team should not be the only people who get to benefit from our location right next to the Potomac! Kayaking is a great way to take a study break, de-stress, and enjoy the serenity and scenery that is right outside our campus.

Kayaks can be rented from a variety of boathouses in Georgetown – including Jacks Boathouse, or Thompson Boat Center – or you can look for on campus outdoor adventure groups that schedule kayaking trips. Lessons are available for first timers.

Get a group of your fellow Hoyas together or sneak off for a day of peace and quiet, either way kayaking on the Potomac is a must for Georgetown collegiettes™.

2.  Visit the Monuments at Night
It seems safe to say that some time in their four years all Hoyas make the trip to the monuments, but the best way to see them may be a little unconventional. Make a point of going to the monuments at night for a completely different experience. DC is beautiful at night, and the monuments are stunning all lit up.

Visiting the monuments at night is a great group activity, and if you and your friends are feeling ambitious maybe even stick around to catch the sunrise!

3. Segway Tour
I can see your skepticism, but put it aside just for a moment. A Segway Tour can be a fun and funny way to see the city. Grab a few friends and see how much fun you can have when you don’t take yourselves too seriously. There are a variety of tours you can choose from, and a variety of tour lengths allowing you to decide how much you want to see.

Just be careful to avoid any Segway accidents and try to steer clear of unsuspecting pedestrians.

4. Visit the Museums
There really is no excuse. Many of the museums are free or have special times when students can attend for free. Make the most of all the culture a Georgetown education affords you.

There are countless museums in DC, but to name a few: The Smithsonian, The Museum of Natural History, The Newseum, The Spy Museum, The Freer Gallery of Art, The National Air and Space Museum, The National Museum of American History, and the National Portrait Gallery.

Visiting one of the museums is a great way to spend a day, learn a little, and explore beyond the hilltop.

5.  See a Show at the Kennedy Center

If you are seeking an alternative to the average college weekend night, seeing a show at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is the perfect choice. The Kennedy Center is beautiful (especially in the winter), and provides a variety of different shows that one can enjoy. Upcoming events for the Kennedy Center include “China: The Art of a Nation” running from September 12th – October 30th, “Les Miserables” running from September 28th – October 30th, and “Norman” running from October 6th – 8th.

Seeing a show at the Kennedy Center is a nice change from the everyday college scene. The Kennedy Center is committed to encouraging a wide audience, so in that spirit they offer specially priced tickets for students. Collegiettes™ love an excuse to dress up, and what better excuse than an elegant night at the theatre!

These are just a few ideas for ways to get off campus, get out into the city, and get the most out of your time at Georgetown!
