Ways to Mix Up your Workout

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Georgetown chapter.

At this point in the year, going to Yates probably seems less appealing than ever. With New Year’s Resolutions fading fast, you might need some new motivation to keep working out this month. Here are some ideas to switch up your workout from the usual Yates experience:

1. Soul Cycle

Located at 2301 M Street, Soul Cycle opened in D.C. this July and has since attracted everyone from Michelle Obama to Vanessa Hudgens. The studio offers 45 minutes classes multiple times a day, so you can easily find one that fits with your schedule. As a full body workout, during the class you do cardio, ab exercises, and weight lifting. Though the price tag of $30 per class is a little steep, you can try Soul Cycle for the first time for only $20. Hop on a bike and spice up your workout!

2. Yoga

Heated yoga is a great way to warm up from the cold temperatures outside and, guess what, Georgetown is right near two different studios! Down Dog Yoga on the Potomac Canal offers a free week of yoga with a valid local Student ID. After your free week, you can get a month of unlimited yoga for just fifty dollars. Down Dog offers classes of different lengths and themes, such as Power Hour and a morning wake-up class. Don’t like Down Dog? CorePower Yoga, located right across from Baked and Wired on Thomas Jefferson Street NW, also offers students a free week of unlimited classes. Plus, Vanessa Hudgens has been known to go to the CorePower “Sculpt” class, so maybe the chance to see a High School Musical star will be enough to get you moving! Both studios offer heated yoga, classes with weights, and more standard yoga, so you’re guaranteed to find something you like. More importantly, both of these locations are within walking distance so you can get in a nice walk in as well!

3. Run to the Monuments

You can’t really say you went to Georgetown if you never made the trek to the monuments; why not do so and get in a workout? The route from the Front Gates to the National Mall is about three miles. More importantly, the route is incredibly scenic, taking you down the streets near campus, along the waterfront, and under a bridge all the way to the Lincoln Memorial. As well as being perfect for your next Instagram, the monuments are a beautiful place to stretch and sit for a while after a nice run. Six miles seem a little ambitious? Why not walk back and appreciate all the hard work you just did and the beauty that is DC.

Closer to home, you could try one of Yates’ many workout classes for something different that doesn’t involve leaving campus. As a student, you can pay $70 for unlimited classes or $5 for a single class. Yates offers everything from spinning to Zumba to Kick Fit (a kickboxing class). Feeling spontaneous? Grab a bathing suit and take a swim in the Yates pool! One half of the pool has swim lanes for swimming laps while the other is open for free swim. For fun, there are floaties, noodles, and inner tubes to relax during or after your swim!
