Three Things You Need To Do This Spring: Fashion, Makeup and Dorm Re-Decoration

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Georgetown chapter.

Being sick in college is probably one of the worst things in the book. No, really. You’re not home in bed, with your mom taking care of you, snuggled under covers and watching movies. In reality, you’re probably trying to get to class, stressing out about the work you’re missing, and not getting better. This is different than high school, where it was okay to miss assignments because you could just hand them in later. So while I’ve been sick this week, missing my mom’s care and occasionally leaving my dorm room to make food, I read so many magazines I lost count. All were focused on the spring, which made me feel a bit better, and inspired me to do a bit of “spring cleaning.” Thanks to InStyle magazine, I have three new things I want to try out for the spring:

1.     Reorganizing your closet a.k.a your dorm room

  • ORGANIZE: go throughout your closet and pull out the things you haven’t worn/don’t plan on wearing. Put these into a container, stash under bed, or send them home so you have more space.
  • HIGHLIGHT: pick out some of your favorite pieces and jot down a few ideas you have to build outfits around them.
  • READ SOME MAGAZINES: just like I did, find some fashion magazines centered around spring and pick out some trends that you love for some outfit inspiration!
  • SHOP AND CREATE: If you’re up to it (which I definitely am!) look for some of those items you want for you spring wardrobe online (sites like Tobi, Forever21, etc.) or down on M Street (where you can find lots of stores that offer student discounts). From there plan out some outfits so you can have go-to looks for this spring.

Cute way to plan out outfits (if you have artistic ability…)  (picture 2)

2.     Find one key piece and build a lot of outfits around it
I think this idea is a great way to save money and work your imagination. InStyle had quite a few ideas for items to add to your wardrobe, but my favorite was a white shirtdress/button down shirt. Almost everyone has a white button down, but look up ways to wear it and you’ll be surprised with the different takes magazines/sites have on it.

3. Try new hair and makeup looks

There were three hair/makeup combos in InStyle that I fell in love with and can’t wait to try. These can be tried out with makeup/hair of your choice or you can mix the looks together.

  • Punk Updo and Rosy Makeup: messy high bun with a “rocker” headband and flushed cheeks and rosy lips
  • Hot Pink Lips and Demure Waves: try a bright pink lip stain/gloss/lipstick(blot it with tissues) and loose waves (use a 1 inch curling iron).

  • Winged Liner and Flirty Pony: curl your hair using a curling iron, flip your head over and shake it out. Pull into a high pony using clear hair ties. Finish off with some winged liner and keep the rest of you face natural.
