Spring Break Fashion: Sunglasses

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Georgetown chapter.

Now that we all have the perfect bathing suits to strut down the beach with, it’s time to add another accessory to perfect the look – sunglasses.

Sunglasses are a summer essential as they not only protect your eyes, but also manage to always look chic.  Although some think that sunglasses of any kind just do not look good on them, I beg to differ. There is such a wide variety out there that there must be some frame to fit someone’s face.  Once you find the perfect shape to fit your face, you can try out a bunch of new trends.  Each year, looks come and go, causing us to look back a few years later, wondering what we were ever thinking rocking those flapper lenses over our glasses. Nonetheless, this year is not a time to play it safe – it’s all about pushing the envelope.  It’s time to take a risk and try those edgy new geometric frames you saw in InStyle magazine, or those round glasses stealing the show in all of Tommy Hilfiger’s nautical ads.  This spring is all about being bold, so go for those neon frames you can’t take your eyes off of—the heads will start turning and you’ll be glad you did.

Round:

This is a look that has to be worn right.  I know what everyone is thinking; “won’t I look like a hippie or a bug, or even worse…Willy Wonka?”  Don’t worry. We have you covered, and the answer is no, no, and definitely not.  The trick to rocking this style is finding a frame that fits your face and matches your current attire.  These sunglasses may not be your everyday wear-with-anything shades, but they will definitely top off that Urban Outfitters outfit you’re wearing to lunch in downtown DC.  And did I mention that Beyonce herself also frequently wears them?  We all know better than to question Queen B’s style.

Oversized Geometric:

A new trend this year is the oversized geometric shades.  This is an evolution of the classic oversized glasses that have been popular since Lauren Conrad first donned them on The Hills.  The geometric shapes gives the style a more modern, edgier look, and can be worn with almost anything depending on the color of the frames.  This is a good trend to try if you want to try something new, but are not ready to totally change your look.  With all the possible shapes of the frames you can’t go wrong with these!

Cat-Eye:

Making a comeback once again is the cat-eye.  This trend has gone in and out of style since the sixties but has become a classic along the way.  If you’re looking for a dramatic look, go for the long, pointed frames, but for a subtler cat-eye that’s good for everyday-wear, shop for a larger lens that will decrease the intensity of the cat-eye shape.  This is one of my favorite looks because of its ability to look relaxed while making a bold fashion statement at the same time.

Patterns, Colors, and Embellishments:

Good for those outdoor concerts are patterned, brightly colored, or embellished sunglasses.  This looks make a statement while being fun. Mirrored lenses are also a popular trend this season, so try combining a mirrored lens with a hot pink frame to really stand out and get the complete look.  Embellishments can be elegant or fun, so depending on your mood you can grab a pair for any occasion. If you want to update your look but don’t want to spend the money, you can also make it into a DIY project and embellish an old pair of shades yourself!

As the saying goes, “the eyes are the window to the soul.” So, show your personality off by choosing a frame that suits you.  Don’t be afraid to try something new as it’s all about taking risks this season, but if you’re still unsure, go with the classic aviators or simple oversized lenses, you can’t go wrong with staples like those!
