Rent: Letters to Juliet

Any movie which has a Taylor Swift ballot in the trailer is a sign of an instant classic.  This film is romantic overload, as it has two adorable love stories occurring side by side, an elderly woman hunting down her long lost love, and the budding romance between Amanda Seyfried and Christopher Egan.  All of this wonderfulness is coupled with the fact the movie takes place in the Italian countryside, and Amanda Seyfried has the best job ever: writing return letters from Shakespeare’s Juliet to star-crossed lovers.

Rent: How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days
When you really think about it, besides Almost Famous, Kate Hudson’s only other decent movie is How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.  If for no other reason than that, this movie should be watched.  If you need more of a reason, this movie is a guaranteed laugh.  Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey have great chemistry, and together they are funny enough to help us forget that even we act a little crazy sometimes.

Rent: Shakespeare in Love
There is no Shakespeare play as romantic or as tragic as the nowhere near semi biographical film of his life.  Nevertheless, it has all the classic Shakespeare elements: cross dressing, a forbidden love, and a character who is merely there for a laugh.  I love this movie because first, the pictures of Shakespeare in my English textbook apparently never did him justice, and second, it’s a sweet romantic take on a historical figure’s life society hardly knows anything about.

Go See: This Means War
Two men fighting over your love? Yes, please! This movie is just one more example of why I wish I was Reese Witherspoon.  In this quirky romantic comedy, two CIA agents and best friends battle for Reese’s attention.  Did I mention those two agents were Chris Pine and Tom Hardy?  Not only are they super handsome, but they seem to have some comedic acting ability.  The best part is that this romantic trio is joined by funny girl Chelsea Handler.  It may not be a tear jerker, but it definitely guarantees to be a few laughs for Valentine’s Day.

Go See: The Vow
Sometimes I wonder if Hollywood has a secret alliance with Kleenex.  Just watch the trailer for the upcoming film, The Vow, and you will know exactly what I am talking about.  What could be better than a romantic drama starring our two guilty pleasure actors, The Notebook’s Rachel McAdams and Dear John’s Channing Tatum?  While The Vow isn’t based on any Nicholas Sparks book (maker of automatic romantic movie classics), it’s reminiscent of all our favorite qualities from his films, tragedy, true love, and a hot leading man.

Yes, to those cynics, it appears to be the sappy girls’ answer to the flop 50 First Dates; for the rest of us, single or in a relationship, it’s the perfect answer to what to do on Valentine’s Day.  I suggest going to see it with your friends and not you boyfriend, simply because, let’s be honest, no man could possibly live up to the expectations which will be created by Channing Tatum.  Don’t forget the tissues!
