Perfect Sunny Day Activities

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Georgetown chapter.

Confession about Global Warming: I don’t hate it. Even if it is bad for the earth – and for that matter, my grades. Spring fever is catching fast around Georgetown as these 60-degree days keep on coming. People are starting to break out the sundresses and flip-flops (perhaps a little aggressive but we all appreciate the enthusiasm), and the general atmosphere around the area seems to be busier, happier, and simply more fun. In order to enjoy this weather to its fullest extent, here are some ways you can spend the sunny days on the Hilltop.

  1. Get dinner/drinks on the waterfront. Sadly, the waterfront endured a massive flood last spring because someone forgot to do their job and put up the floodgates, but some restaurants are still open for business (we miss you Farmers & Fishers). On gorgeous days like the ones we’ve been having, there’s nothing better than strolling down and enjoying a Tequila Sunrise while casually looking at the Kennedy Center’s reflection in the Potomac. Hands down best way to spend a springy Friday afternoon.
  2. Run to the monuments. Okay, yes, this one is not as fun as drinking by the waterfront since it involves exercising, but if you haven’t tried it yet then trust me on this one. It’s a two-mile run to the Lincoln Memorial, and if you’re feeling extra ambitious you can go all the way to the Capitol. On sunny days the views are absolutely stunning and you can make all your friends from home jealous when you remind them that the Washington Monument is only, like, an easy jog away.
  3. If you don’t have the time to run all the way to the monuments then use Capital Bikeshare. It’s cheap and fun and a really easy way to get your butt outside of the Georgetown bubble. Bike along the Potomac until you reach the museums, park your bike in a Capital Bikeshare rack downtown, and walk around the Washington Mall or venture into a museum. We tend to think that there’s nothing beyond M & Wisconsin…but there is. Biking is a quick and inexpensive way to see more of the city we apparently live in.
  4. Kayak on the Potomac. We might need to wait for the weather to warm up a little bit more for this one, but this is such a fun way to get outside of Georgetown. You can go all the way down to the Jefferson Memorial and get a good tan at the same time. Do it.
  5. Hang out on Healy Lawn. Yeah, it’s a predictable move, but what’s the point in going to Georgetown if you don’t take a few seconds to park it in front of one of the most good-looking college buildings around? Grabbing some lunch and picnicking on the lawn is what Georgetown is all about. Bring a towel, some music, and hang for a few hours. Getting beyond the area and into the rest of D.C. is important, obviously, but if Georgetown weren’t the prettiest/most fun neighborhood in Washington, we wouldn’t go to school here. Duh. So take advantage of it!

Enjoy the weather, collegiettes. They say that March comes in like a lamb and goes out like a lion, but fingers crossed that the weatherman will be on our side with this one.
