A Georgetown Take on Mardi Gras

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Georgetown chapter.

If you’re from New Orleans, there is very little that you look forward to every year more than Mardi Gras. The colors purple, green and gold have never looked so good and the king cake has never tasted so sweet. We live for it. We breathe it, and I think it’s important, every once in a while, for a native to impart some well-tested knowledge to those who are new to the celebration. Now that Mardi Gras is upon us, I can pass on the top five things every college girl visiting New Orleans during the most special time of the year should know.

1. Invest in a pair of rain boots- Whether you go with the timeless Hunters which seem to come out in more bright colors every day or you go with a bold print, these are a must-have for Mardi Gras. Trust me. You will wake up one morning and there will be a 100% chance of rain. You will need to grab these before heading out the door because, simply put, the party goes on.

2. Catching beads- Not only is Mardi Gras fun, but it is family friendly. You don’t want to be that girl. You just don’t. On that note, pushing over little kids to get beads is just not acceptable. Hold off for the good beads. I’m talking about the ones that are the size of your face. Patience is key.

3. Find the crawfish- People who are not familiar with this finest of delicacies often call them “tiny lobsters.” In actuality, they are so much more. If you are lucky, they come with a spicy side of potatoes and corn. This is when you call up that friend of a friend of a friend who you heard was throwing a crawfish boil on the neutral ground because when it comes to getting your hands on crawfish, anything goes. I only managed to track down a single crawfish this Mardi Gras, and I am regretting every single second of it

4. It’s all in the bag- Scoring a cute but practical bag for the festivities is clutch. You often will be out on the streets for hours on end. Whether it is a chic backpack or your favorite satchel, you will need something to hold all of the essentials. But make sure you have something that zips because in spite of what our football team may tell you, we ain’t no saints, and some have wandering hands.

5. Portable phone charger- Right now, my phone is laying on the streets somewhere of New Orleans. If I would have had this game-changer, I may have charged it when I was at the foreboding 1% (we have all been there), and I may have experienced one of those rare occasions where Find My iPhone actually comes in handy. Nowadays, portable juice is a necessity and for all of us fashionistas has evolved into a cute accessory. Oh, and if you happen to be in New Orleans and you see an iPhone in a glittery case, it’s mine.
