First semester? Check.
Sanity? Check.
Incredibly good-looking and charming boyfriend? Well, okay let’s take it one step at a time.
It’s official! I survived my first semester at the hilltop! It seems like just yesterday I was moving into Darnall. Before I knew it, room 413 had become my home. Although it all seems to have passed in the blink of an eye, I have loved every minute of being a Hoya.
Now here I am, fingers poised at the keyboard ready to share all my freshman excitements, faux pas, milestones, struggles, and anything else I discover as I wrap up my first year at Georgetown. I’m back from break, rejuvenated from some serious Christmas shopping and skiing adventures, and prepped for spring semester.
My motto (besides Hoya Saxa obviously): One day at a time.
So, what, you may ask, is my secret to staying so organized and graceful under pressure for spring semester? A little thing I like to call my Lilly Pulitzer planner.
In high school I used to buy planners a lot. I liked to pretend that I was one of those people who actually had their life figured out and condensed it all neatly in one mini book. Evidently that didn’t work out as the planners usually ended up blank by the end of the year, while it looked like a Post-it blizzard had invaded my room full of to-do lists and reminders.
College is a different story. I decided I was no longer going to look like a crazed, teenage stress ball running on four hours of sleep. So I committed myself to sit down and schedule. Lo and behold it worked! Granted, my planner includes adorable sticker accessories making the whole process much more enjoyable, but hey, whatever works for you right? Trust me when I tell you that it’s an amazing feeling to feel like you have your workload under control and still have room for fun social outings! Make sure to insert some of those in too; everyone needs a breather once in a while. Planner in hand you’ll be calm, cool, and collected. Until finals come around of course – but that’s four months away yet. Plus if you’re like me, you’ve always wanted to join the sophisticated, mature crowd that responds to invitations with “Let me see where I can pencil you in.”
So here’s to hoping for a fabulous and smooth-sailing second semester. Perhaps one that includes that incredibly good-looking and charming boyfriend? Sorry, must be the influence of watching endless episodes of The O.C. with the roomie.
I’ve decided to end each blog post with a survival tip. Check back every week for another Georgetown freshman saga and more survival tips! This means YOU too upperclassmen. Who doesn’t want to relive the glory days of freshman year? And who knows, you might even find some of the tips helpful too!
XOXO,
Hoya Saxa
Georgetown Freshman Survival Tip #1:
Want to kick of the semester on the right track? Buy a planner. Preferably of the colorful variety (trust me, it’s the little things that can make you the most happy.) A planner can become an extremely useful scheduling tool as a freshman and help to ensure a slightly less stressful semester.
