Award Show Fashion Trends

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Georgetown chapter.

Award shows are a fun way to spend a Sunday night (and a great way to procrastinate for work due Monday), and arguably the best part of any award show is the red carpet.  Although the Oscars are the biggest celebrity event of the awards season, smaller shows include more fashion risks and fewer safe choices.  They also give us a glimpse into the best celebrity trends of the coming year:

Business Formal

This may seem like an older look, but so far this season some younger celebrities are making it their own.  Lorde rocked a tuxedo-inspired ensemble at the Golden Globes and Emma Stone followed suit at the SAG Awards with an interesting Dior piece that combined a blazer and a sheer train.  The look is edgy, interesting, and probably much more comfortable than a ball gown would be.

Bold Patterns

At the SAG Awards, Rashida Jones and Lupita Nyong’o each wore bold patterned dresses, with varying degrees of success.  Although Lupita (who could wear a trash bag and look incredible) outshone Jones, both dresses were a breath of fresh air in a mix of more neutral florals.  Bold patterns take some bravery, but they’re typically worth the reward.

Vintage

Vintage looks are always fun, and with many styles to choose from they never get boring.  Jennifer Aniston stunned in a flapper-inspired dress at the SAG Awards, bringing just the right amount of 1920’s style.  At the Golden Globes, Lana Del Rey went full-out 1950’s in aqua gown (which I love in spite of the hate it’s received).

Jumpsuits

Slowly but surely, jumpsuits are making a comeback.  At the People’s Choice Awards, Ellen Pompeo (Meredith Grey!) and Portia de Rossi both wore incredibly glamorous jumpsuits—in light pink and cobalt, respectively.  Emma Stone also wore a jumpsuit this year at the Golden Globes, effortlessly executing a difficult style.

Classic

The classic look, a staple of award shows and successful wardrobes, has also had a solid red carpet presence this year.  Two Golden Globes standouts were Amal Clooney and Amy Adams.  Both wore flattering and relatively simple solid-colored gowns and, in spite of the controversy over Amal’s gloves, both looked great in classic dresses.
