How to Effortlessly Sparkle from Sunrise to Sunset

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at George Mason University chapter.

There’s nothing like sequins, glitter, and rhinestones to lift a girl up when she’s feeling down. The same rule applies to pedicures and a hearty tub of Chunky Monkey ice cream. The difference is that sparkle has always been a nighttime staple, but what about when you need a boost during daylight hours? We’ve all had days when we’re dreading work or we’ve given up on studying for our exams. The good news is that sequins aren’t just for cocktail parties and beauty pageants anymore. Here are five ways to wear your bling whenever your outfit is in need of a pep talk:

Headbands
Sequins reflect light in all the right ways, so what better way to brighten up your complexion and add some sparkle to your eyes than a glitzy headpiece? You won’t regret it when you frame your face with an attention-grabbing headband that features sequins in a big way. A plain, thick band works well for a low maintenance look, but don’t shy away from intricate, sequined designs and touchable flower accents. Normally I’d recommend keeping the rest of the outfit neutral, but because a headband isn’t incredibly large, you could try this with some neon basics.

Sweaters
Sequins can be overpowering during the day, but only if you let them take charge. One foolproof way to pull off a shimmery daytime look is to incorporate them into a masculine, ultra-casual silhouette. For a great summer-to-fall transition piece, I recommend an oversized boxy sweater in a neutral color with sequins stitched over the main body of the piece, along the sleeves and shoulders, or simply woven throughout. The neutral color keeps the outfit low-key and the oversized shape makes you feel comfortable and look sexy.

Pants
One of the more difficult ways to wear sparkle is the increasingly popular sequin pant, cousin to the metallic wet-look legging. The most important thing to remember about wearing sequin pants during the daytime is that the silhouette can make or break your outfit. Be sure to keep it slouchy by opting for a relaxed shape and keep an eye out for loungewear-inspired details like a drawstring waist and soft and banded cuffs. Wear your pant with a crop top and booties to make this tricky piece look like an effortless afterthought.

Shoes
Nothing amps up a pair of jeans and basic tee like a sexy pair of killer heels. In turn, nothing amps up a sexy pair of killer heels like rhinestones. For an instant confidence boost, reach for your favorite pair of glittery pumps in a bright color or fun pattern and pair them with shredded light-wash denim jeans and a simple white top. Pull your hair up into a messy bun or spray in some texturizing spray for a rocker-chic vibe and you might as well spend the rest of the day with the paparazzi behind you.

Shoes

Arm Accessories
The easiest way to add some sparkle to your day is to incorporate sequins in your jewelry or handbags. Watches, sprinkled with rhinestones in shades of gold, are the perfect dripping-in-diamonds imitators. If watches aren’t your go-to wrist jewelry, perhaps a sequined cuff or chunky ring peppered with rhinestones is more up your alley. If your fingers like their freedom, you can’t go wrong with your favorite colored sequin clutch or a chunky, colorful sequined purse to accompany your understated outfit. Most importantly, I ask that you please heed this advice now: it is never okay to think that a rhinestoned belt buckle is something that belongs in your wardrobe. Find another use for it; future you will thank me.

Above all, limit your daytime sparkle to one piece in an outfit at a time. If you can stick to that rule and rock your favorite blinged-out looks with confidence, you will have no trouble spicing up your day-to-day outfits when you need a boost of fab.
