I first met Alex when she returned from study abroad in Europe and replaced a roommate of mine who had graduated in the winter. After a semester abroad in the Netherlands, adjusting to life in the states again was different for her, and we became close friends discussing our lives and goals. Since we’ve met, she has continued to inspire me with her dedication to academia and her career.

Alex was able to create her own major through New Century College; it is integrative studies major with a concentration in global information management and a minor in communication. Now, I had no idea what that major meant when we met, but put simply, she works for a technology company and interacts with clients to understand their software needs, then talks with software designers about meeting those needs expressed by the client. It requires a high knowledge of available and developing technology and how that technology works in the workplace.

She humbly admits to her GPA of 3.89, which she has managed to achieve while balancing a large plate of personal, school and work triumphs. She’ll graduate after this fall semester, with Magna Cum Laude, or with great honor.

On top of a stellar GPA, she’s also managed to complete three different internships. Her first internship was with the Office of Disability Services on campus, then she was a marketing intern for CompSec, and her most recent internship was an instructional design position at Asurion.  Alex says one of the biggest keys to keeping everything straight is organization. She stated, “I make a lot of checklists. It sounds silly, but it’s actually effective for me.”

In addition to her work ethic, she’s also a really funny and lighthearted person. She takes the work in her life seriously, but also likes to have fun and travel to new places. One of the best memories I have as friends with Alex was when she met me in Europe after I finished a study abroad program in the summer, and we traveled to different countries for a week and a half. She loves different cultures and meeting people, and ahe could use that to eventually go overseas with her career.

Overall, Alex is the type of girl who can work first and play later. New Century College wrote an article about her and what she did in her program in the Netherlands, and she’s been published on the site as a writer. Alex is going to go on to do great things, and is currently talking to prospective employers such as CGI. She’s a great example of a celebrity on campus, and a fierce corporate woman in the field!

Since moving to DC a lot has changed for me. I love bringing people to new places and having a great time in the city.
