The 3 Best Ways to Make Money as a Student

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at George Mason University chapter.

We all know that being a student comes with its perks, but it also comes with debt and some struggle. With studying,  internships, and trying to maintain a social life, finding a job seems almost impossible. Thinking about taking time away from studying to go make some extra money can be a bit stressful. However, there are so many different ways students can work and still make time for their academic life.

1. Babysitting

If you can deal with being around kids, babysitting is really the easiest way to make some extra money. If you sacrifice a few of your weekend nights, you will be able to make money and get your work done at the same time. Usually, evening babysitting requires hanging out with the kids, putting them to bed, and having free time for homework. Essentially, when seeing it as getting paid to do homework, I don’t think it gets much better than that.

2. Front Desk Associate

Another way to get paid for doing your homework is working as a front desk associate at a hotel, doctor’s office, or business firm. Front desk jobs don’t usually require too much work, you gain great experience for your resume, and also have time to do homework. Most front desk jobs also give a fair hourly wage, which will be a good supplemental set of extra income for your weekends out.

3. Retail

If you aren’t too keen on being around kids for a couple of hours at a time, retail is an easy way to make some extra money. You won’t be able to do your homework during work, but you can get convenient discounts and save yourself money. Make sure to pick a place that you will benefit from the discount!

I have had a fair share of jobs throughout my college career that fall under all three of these categories. While it wasn’t always the most exciting thing to do, it was nice to see that little bit of extra money in my account. Working doesn’t have to take away from the rest of your school experience. If you choose the right job and plan accordingly, you will benefit greatly. It’s never too late to start applying!
