Fun Winter/ Holiday Activities I’d Rather Be Doing Than School Work

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Geneseo chapter.

At this point in the semester, everyone is up to their ears in projects, essays and final exams. Most of us can see the finish line, and we’re waiting for the day when we’re finally done with this semester. Due to a small amount of procrastination, I have talked to many friends and we made a list of every winter activity we would rather be doing right now than school work. Let’s reflect on what we would really rather be doing with our time at this moment, as long as there’s actually snow on the ground and climate change is letting us have our snowy fun.

1. Ice skating

Even though I am still learning how to ice skate without digging the the tip of the skate into the ice, my friends and I love to frequent our college’s ice rink. Due to school, that sadly isn’t happening any time soon, but we can dream.

2. Snowboarding/ Skiing

I’ve never tried either of the two, but my guy friend loves to snowboard. He even misses “face planting.” One of my roommates, on the other hand, prefers skiing. Both would somehow lead to me getting injured, but I’d be willing to try if it meant I could stop working on my many projects and essays.

3. Sledding

When the snow really falls, the extremely hilly campus works our in our favor. This year, however, we probably won’t be breaking any sleds any time soon.

4. Snowball fight

Granted, this one can be done just walking to get dinner, but the thought of more work still looms over our heads as the piles of snow get stuck in our hair.

5. Make an igloo

I wish we had the space to make a real igloo up here, but it would be difficult considering how many people live around here. It would still be better than work, though.

6. Build a snowman

Creating your own snowman brings us back to childhood memories. Sadly, that snowman would probably have a frowny face because of what we’re going through right now.

7. Ice fishing

One of my roommates wishes she could go ice fishing with her family again. She was catching fish and making memories, but now she is only making flashcards.

8. Ride horses in the snow

All my equestrian friends express how much they wanted to be riding horses in the snow and looking at the stunning coats become covered in white. At least the horses get to relax.

9. Go caroling

Caroling was a major part of my life before college. I wish I could be singing songs of snow and joy, but instead I’m singing the blues.

10.  Go to a hockey game

Technically, no matter how much work we had, most of my friends would still go and see our Geneseo Ice Knights play.

11.  Watching movies

Most of us wish we could be watching movies instead of preparing for finals. We still can, but we’d be focusing more on the work than on the film.

12.  Hot chocolate by the fire

Fire is not allowed in dorm rooms. We can’t even have candles. We can still drink hot chocolate though. That’s all I can say about this one.

13.  Nap

My roommates are all huge nap-lovers. They’ll be losing a lot of sleep this semester because of our insane schedules.

14.  Bake

Nothing is better than freshly baked cookies on a cold winter day. If only we had the time to make them so we can eat our stress away.

15.  Read a book

The only reading I’ll be doing is for all my English and communication classes. No reading for fun this week.

16.  Do a puzzle

My friends and I used to do a lot of puzzles last year. This year, instead of trying to put together a pretty picture, we’re trying to piece together our grades.

17.  Make a gingerbread house

I’ve always wanted to spend time making a beautiful gingerbread house. My zero artistic skills would mirror the zeroes I’d get on all of my finals if I actually tried to make a gingerbread house.

18.  Look at pretty decorations

One of my favorite things to do is drive around and look at all of the pretty decorations outside of the houses. This isn’t very practical because it’s not only a waste of gas, but it would also eat up too much of my valuable study time.

Boy, I can’t wait for the semester to be over.
