6 Cheap and Easy DIY Halloween Costumes for Broke College Students

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Geneseo chapter.

Happy Spooky month everyone! Are you struggling to come up with the perfect Halloween costume? Worry no more! You’ve come to the right place! Here are six cheap costumes that you might already have in your closet (or your roommate’s closet).

DisneyBound

What is DisneyBound? It’s a trend that began because adults are not allowed to wear Disney character costumes in Disney World. Instead, adults started wearing normal clothes that just happen to resemble iconic characters. You can do this with any classic character (not just the princesses) by matching their color pallet! Here are some examples from disneybound.co archives.

Your School Mascot

For example, the SUNY Geneseo mascot is Victor E. Knight. To dress up as Victor would be really simple. You would need blue leggings or pants, a silver or white skater skirt, a blue shirt and silver or white gloves! Of course you won’t be able to look exactly like your mascot, but we’re broke college students so don’t complain about costume accuracy!

A Soda Can

This may sound weird, but it’s an easy and recognizable costume. For example, let’s say your favorite soda is Coca Cola. Grab a red shirt and red skirt or pants, tape a printed out Coca Cola label to your shirt, and you’re done! You can add some flair such as a paper pop tab or carry around bubbles to be your carbonation, but you don’t even have to go that far if you don’t want to!

DIY Costume

I literally mean to go as a DIY costume. Stick random cellophane tape all over yourself, carry a (not plugged in) hot glue gun, attach a ruler to yourself, color yourself with random washable marker scribbles and just look like a mess. Look like you tried so hard, but failed.

Cartoon Character

“Kim Possible,” “Adventure Time,” “Gravity Falls,” “Phineas and Ferb” and the list goes on. Pick a humanoid cartoon character (if you’re going for easy) and dress with the same color scheme as that character. For example, to be Candace from “Phineas and Ferb,” wear a white skirt, red top and scream “MOM” all night long!

Finals Week

Draw big purple bags under your eyes, rock some bed head hair, wear a sweatshirt and pajama pants and carry a Starbucks cup in one hand and a textbook in the other. To really make this costume complete you should shuffle around and pretend to fall asleep. If you’re really committed, just burst into tears randomly!

Happy costume making!
