Hey curly-haired friends! Have your curls been feeling dry, limp or weighed down? No to worry, I have the answers and it all comes down to sulfates, parabens, and silicones. What’re those? They are harmful ingredients that are found in your shampoos, conditioners, and hair styling products. Major Companies such as Aussie, Tresemme, and Garnier pump their products with them, exhibiting bouncy, healthy hair, even though they are filled with the products listed above and have been animal tested! It’s been shown that sulfates cause hair loss, fade natural hair color, and irritate your scalp! Thankfully brands like Devacurl and Shea Moisture have made their products without these ingredients, for the good of curl kind. For example, if you were to look at your hair products, the most popular and worst silicones for you are Trimethylsilylamodimethicone, Dimethicone, Stearyl Dimethicone, and many more. As for parabens and silicones, keep an eye out for anything that ends with a -cone or -ben. At first, it is a bit tricky trying to decipher names that you have never seen before, but it gets easier with time. Thankfully some products will advertise that they don’t have silicones, parabens, or sulfates right on the front label, Cantu has just recently started doing so.  Unfortunately, those with curly hair are prone to dryness due to natural oils taking more time to reach the bottom of the strand. Thus, making your hair prone to breakage and mass amounts of shedding. Thankfully, that’s where deep conditioning comes in handy.  Deep conditioning your hair once a week will also strengthen and soften your hair to help protect from outside elements such as extreme heat or cold. For people who color their hair, swim regularly, have damaged hair, use heat tools often, and spend lots of time in the sun you might want to consider deep conditioning twice instead of once a week. Deep conditioning is not the same as conditioning your hair in the shower. Instead, deep conditioning is where you leave a deep conditioner, or hair masque in your hair for 20-30 minutes after washing. People who deep condition at least once a week have stated that their hair has gotten longer due to less breakage. If you wanted to take it a step further, oils such as Castor and Peppermint can help promote hair growth and make the follicle stronger. This is not only important information for curly-haired girls/ boys but all hair types in general. For some, bad hair might indicate having a bad day, for others hair represents one’s femininity. No matter what, hair is valued among most, if not all, cultures and nations. Embracing what you were born with will make a positive change on you and your style.
