SGA President Hopeful: Laura Ahrens

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at GCSU chapter.

Her Campus: Tell me a bit about yourself!

Laura Ahrens: My name is Laura Ahrens. I am a junior, political science major and business management minor. My birthday is May 27, which means that I’m a Gemini – I even have a twin sister who goes here! Geminis are known for being personable and great communicators while also having a more serious and determined side. My favorite color, besides blue and green, has to be orange. I have always loved the color orange since it’s such a vibrant, feel good color.

HC: Why have you decided to run for SGA President?

LA: I have decided to run for SGA President because the administration and faculty on our campus are unbelievably receptive to student ideas and feedback. I have been able to work with so many student organizations, departments and university officials over my past 3 years on SGA that I have been inspired by how much we truly can get done on this campus with the right leaders. The Student Government Association on our campus has the unique ability to actually impact and improve campus life for students by working with administration to achieve results that students want and need and I continue to be committed to this organization and all GC students.

HC: What are you most passionate about improving at Georgia College?

LA: I am most passionate about focusing on 6 main areas of campus life that either directly or indirectly affect all of the students at Georgia College. I plan to work towards improving parking and alternative parking options, building renovations and maintaining spaces for student events and meetings, increasing the use of technology on campus, renovating the intramural facilities and promoting our athletics department, raising awareness of campus safety policies and enhancing the Student Emergency Fund for students in need.

HC: What does your platform consist of?

LA: My plan as President is to focus on the previously mentioned 6 areas of campus life with the purpose of inclusive excellence in mind. I have and will continue to make the wants of every single student my top priority by centering my goals on the fact that they all influence students and determine the student experience on campus. My experience on the executive board of SGA over the past 2 years and my honest yet effective communication skills will allow me to actively achieve these goals and continue improving our beautiful campus.

HC: Why are you a good candidate to vote for?

LA: I am the candidate running with the most experience since I have had the chance to serve with the President side by side on the executive board for the past 2 years, as the Secretary and the Vice President. I have been able to work with so many students and administrators to see what works and what doesn’t both on a small scale and at a larger scale. Additionally, I am an active member and leader on campus in multiple organizations including the GC team of Ambassadors, the GEM Leadership Program and Greek life. Throughout my time at Georgia College and my involvement I have come to realize that we need a leader in this position who not only understands student needs but who is able to communicate efficiently and effectively between those administrators and students.

HC: Any skeletons in your closet that would inhibit your election?

LA: Well…if I told you, I’d have to kill you.

Note: All SGA Presidential Candidates were invited to interview with Her Campus GCSU. Her Campus GCSU does not openly support any candidate.
