Need a board op? Call Tyler Voyles

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at GCSU chapter.

When people at GCSU and in Milledgeville, are in need of someone to design the lights or the sound for a show, the first person they usually go to is Tyler Voyles. Tyler, who just started his fifth year at the school, is the local Theatre major who is always in high demand. Put him in charge of your lights or sound and you will not de disappointed.

He didn’t start out like this though. He used to be a Physics major at Dalton State College in his hometown of Dalton, GA, but after his sophomore year of college, he realized it wasn’t what he truly wanted to do with his life. He transferred to GCSU before his junior year and changed his major to Theatre. The change required an extra year of school, but he thinks it was worth it. He likes to reference the Confucius quote “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life” because he says that’s how he feels about the work he does. “I love what I do. I want to do it every day. I’ll be that person who likes going to work.”

He is currently designing sound for the school’s upcoming production of Death of a Salesman, which will also be his capstone project. He is also going to be doing the lights and sound for one night of the Directing I Scenes in December.

While he does not step onstage nearly as often as he works behind the scenes, he has acted before. His past shows at GCSU include Spring Awakening, Twelfth Night, and Harrison Bergeron. He is also getting ready for two upcoming roles. He will be portraying Eddie in GCSU’s annual shadowcast of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, a role he has played for the past two years as well. He will also be showing off his singing talents as the evil Judge Turpin in Sweeney Todd, which will be one of the Directing I Scenes in December.

Outside of theatre, he enjoys making music with his friends (he plays guitar and drums) and making and painting plastic models.

Considering how involved he is with the theatre department, it’s no surprise that he’s a popular student at the school. Most people cite him as one of the funniest and smartest people they know.

Tyler doesn’t consider himself a Campus Celebrity, but he says it’s not too difficult to get your name known. He says if you want to make new friends, just put yourself out there. Get involved in groups and clubs, be friendly to everyone, and go to different social events. That’s the advice he followed and he’s glad he did.

Math major, theatre kid, professional hottie.
