Erin McElveen: Kappa Delta’s Next President

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at GCSU chapter.

I have had the pleasure of knowing Erin for the last three years. She is a goofy, fun loving, wonderful woman. She is from Smyrna, GA and is a Management major and an Management Information Systems minor at Georgia College, so Atkinson is her second home. She works on campus at the Women’s Center as an assistant and helps them out with whatever is going on at the time. She has worked there since the beginning of her sophomore year and absolutely loves it; the people are great and its nice to be able to help out an organization that does so much good on campus. Finally, the most important thing about Erin is that she love cats. Let’s be honest, she is a straight up cat lady.

Her Campus: How does it feel to be Kappa Delta’s newest elected president?
Erin McElveen: It’s exciting and nerve-racking to be the new KD president because I have some big shoes to fill and a lot of work ahead of me. Our past presidents have made a lot of positive progress, and I’m pumped to get the opportunity to continue that.

HCHow were you involved in Kappa Delta prior to your current position?
EM: Before elected as President, I served as Vice President- Finance, Assistant to Vice President- Finance, and a member of the House Corporation. I also got involved with as many committees as I could because I think they’re so much fun. Getting to spend time with sisters working on things like homecoming floats and greek goddess is the best and its a great way to get involved. I also attended a few events that alumnae chapters put on like State Day and Founder’s Day because I love getting to know sisters outside of my own chapter.

HCWhat is your favorite part about being involved in Kappa Delta?
EM: Looking back over the past couple of years, one of my many favorite things has been getting to live in the house with seven other sisters. I live there now, and I’ll live there until I graduate in May 2017. It’s such an amazing experience to be around your sisters 24/7 and somehow by the grace of God, not go crazy. From pranking each other on the daily, to sisterhood events, to grilling out and watching big games together, there’s never a dull moment at the house!

HCWhat are you looking forward to the most about being president?
EM: I’m most excited to lead the new council and chapter to work towards the goals we’ve set. We have a got a lot of momentum and great ideas to implement, and I’m ready to get this year started. It’s a pretty cool opportunity to be able serve the chapter that’s given me so much already, so I’m more than thrilled to get started.

HCWhat would you tell someone who was nervous about applying for a leadership position?
EM: To someone that wants to hold a leadership position, I would say to be open to all leadership positions, don’t hesitate to apply, and be confident in your abilities. I think its so important to be open to different positions, because even if you don’t get the position you thought you wanted, if you’re passionate about your organization, you’re going to fall in love with your job. For example, my freshman year I applied for a few position and VP-Finance wasn’t my top choice. To be honest, I was terrified when I got it because the thought of dealing with other people’s money is super scary. I soon realized that I should have been more open because when I became VP-Finance, I loved it and couldn’t imagine being any other position. My second piece of advice is not to hesitate to apply or interview. There no telling what could happen, so why not apply! The people choosing could see something in you that you didn’t even see. The worst that could happen is they say no, and you try for something else. The last thing is to be confident in your skills and strengths. It’s okay to brag on yourself a little in leadership applications because you should be proud of your accomplishments.
