Will My Chemical Romance Be Getting Back Together?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

I guess I’ll get it off my chest first. Yes, the band is back together- technically. For a brief few shows, the band of every teenage emo girl’s dreams has reunited and have already played their singular USA show in California- which sold out in a matter of hours (and no I didn’t get tickets no matter how much I was willing to bankrupt myself to see the boys).

These were the first few shows since 2012 when the band first dissolved and fans were wild. The series that lead to the announcement of their revival was a series of puzzles, cryptic messages and fan theories running wild.

My Chemical Romance is currently formed with the lead vocalist Gerard Way, guitarists Ray Toro and Frank Iero and bassist Mikey Way. Their first studio album I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love, in 2002. They have since released four studio albums including Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge (2004), The Black Parade (2006) and Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys (2010).

You can imagine then, why fans were so excited to hear about a reunion show nine years after the last album was released. The elaborate messages left by the band as their announcements both have started and intrigued the landscape of Twitter. On the spooky night of Oct. 31, 2019, the band announced on their official twitter page of ‘The Return’.

I, of course, tried my best to score some tickets for both the show and a plane ride there. I even pleaded and begged for my parents to help and fund this fruitless endeavor. Tickets were sold out before I even had the chance to reach for my credit card. Afterward, though, it seems that My Chemical Romance has no plans for any other USA shows and instead has made numerous announcements for world tours across Australia, New Zealand, Japan, the United Kingdom.

Fans alike have had their notifications on for this crazy band since as of late their posts have been more and more cryptic. On Jan. 12 they posted a 12-second video that shows flashes of vigils. From Twitter to Reddit, the fans were working quickly to decode what was going on in a force rival to the Swifties. The fan connected the symbols to imagery from Tarot Cards such as the Reversed Ace of Swords, Reversed Moon, Upright Tower and Upright Ace of Wands. In the end, they believed that they had a conclusion that pointed towards a promise of new music.

They then posted an untitled picture of a sheet-covered gurney that only was captioned with a vampire emoji. The image that is often linked to the Welcome to the Black Parade album and tour where Gerard would often appear onstage covered by a sheet and laying in a gurney before he would leap into action and begin with their song ‘Dead!’.

The next video to come out from their twitter was on Jan. 16 and showed a quick drive-by of the old danger days car followed by more unintelligible sigils. Then, again on Jan. 19, they posted another video captioned ‘An Offering’ that features robe-clad figures over a pentagram and an announcement for the UK shows. Spooky, right?

We’re all waiting for a real announcement, with hope in our hearts for the fated day when MCR will provide us with the sweet nectar of new music for a new era of emo boys, girls and nonbinary rockers.
