Why Am I so Bad at Buying People Christmas Presents?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

That time of year has arrived again. It’s time to go Christmas present shopping and all I want this season is for someone to explain to me why I find it so hard to shop for other people’s presents. I know what all my friends and family like, but I always struggle to find them their perfect gift. I always make myself feel so pressured to find a good gift just to eventually end up buying some random relatable mug.

It almost feels like there is so much pressure placed on making a creative, personal present for all your loved ones around Christmas. I like to think I am creative enough to do this every year, but I am just not. Eventually, my gifts have just seemed to become repetitive. Why can’t it just be an unwritten rule that if you do not know what to get someone you’re allowed to just ask for a list of possible gifts?

Have I tried finding gift guides? Yes.

Have I tried looking on Pinterest for cute gift ideas? Yes.

I legitimately cannot explain it, but finding gifts for people stresses me out so much. I hate getting a last-minute, bare minimum gift. I always want to do the absolute most for my friends and family, especially after seeing the great gifts other people have come up with. I spend so much time looking for ideas and trying to get something they will get use out of and love, but in the end, it always just becomes a very basic broad gift.

This year I think I want to try something different. I want to not give up on fully personalized gifts, instead, I want to attempt to find everyone something that is perfectly fitted to them. I’m still going to use ideas from online, like Pinterest, for creatives ideas on wrapping my gifts. I will probably still buy people mugs because everyone can use a new mug and they are just so cute, but I’ll put some little things inside the mug to make it fully personal.

I am also thinking about writing little notes on each gift. Instead of just handing someone a gift, I want to have some little short story of why I chose that gift for them and what it means. I’ve lately become so intrigued by brown paper wrapping tied together with a thin rope. Pinterest seems to agree that this kind of wrapping is becoming a cute trend. These DIY wrappings definitely help in making your gifts look more personalized.

I know this is just a bunch of paragraphs of me rambling on about my losses on gift searching, but I have a feeling I’m not alone in this. Gift giving is harder than we make it out to be. Of course, I love giving gifts and making people happy, but the process leading up that truthfully drains me. Please, if you get a gift from me this Christmas, know that I tried very hard on it and I love you a whole lot.
