What Is the Enneagram Personality Test and Why You Should Take It

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

Modern-day social media can take any topic of interest and turn it into a worldwide conversation. This summer we saw this with the Chick-fil-A and Popeyes chicken sandwich debate that erupted after a viral Twitter exchange between Popeyes and Chick-fil-A. Now we are seeing similar patterns of this with the Enneagram Personality Test that was endorsed by many female influencers including Remi Cruz, Danielle Carolan and Meredith Foster leading to its popularity. But what exactly is it? According to The Enneagram Institute, The Enneagram is a set of nine different personality types organized by a number corresponding to each type. It is common to find a little bit of yourself in all nine types but usually, there is one that corresponds closely to your personality more than the others. This type is called your basic personality type, which is similar to a dominant personality type that emerges during adolescence. Here are three reasons why you should take it!

1.  Introspection

This test is scarily accurate and harsh in terms of feeding you your personality strengths and weaknesses. Most people love the affirmation that what they have already perceived of themselves is true. Knowing your personality traits can aide in being aware of what your attributes are and how they can help you in your endeavors.

2. Relationship/Dating help

The Enneagram gives you a look into certain traits or habits that you’ve never explored. Making both partners aware of the results of the test and their meanings will aide in being aware of each other’s virtues and vices.

3. Team Building

Working as a team can be tough on contributors that all have differing opinions and ideas. After taking the Enneagram, it is easier to create teams that seem to work best together. It also allows for easy delegation of tasks based on individual personalities.

Personally, I love the test. I have always been a bit skeptical of “self-discovery quizzes” as a whole but this is by far my best experience. The test asks relevant personality questions that can open a part of you that no one sees. I am a Type 6, which is called “The Loyal Skeptic.” As I read through the description of the personality type, I felt as if I finally had answers to why I have made certain decisions.

The Enneagram Personality Test may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it can do more to help than to harm. The benefits that the test can offer for relationships, personal growth and social perception make taking the test all the more worth it. Find out your Enneagram number here. Also, the Instagram account Enneagram & Coffee makes posts based on your Enneagram. This is a great follow for some fun on your Instagram feed. A little self-discovery never hurts!
