As a sucker for romantic comedies, I can say that the movie Valentine’s Day is easily one of my favorites. Director Gary Marshall must have a thing for holiday’s, as he is also responsible for the movies New Year’s Eve and Mother’s Day, both of which follow the same theme of having a cast list full of a-list celebrities. It stars so many fan favorites and their intertwining stories coupled-up, broken-up and making-up on, you guessed it, Valentine’s Day.

Personally, I love watching movies with so many plot lines. It’s a popular cinematic technique that I think brings an aspect of excitement and anticipation for when they all come together. With that being said, here are some of my personal favorite couples and a sneak peek at what makes their storylines top tier.

The Love triangle: Julia, Pamela and Dr. Harrison Copeland

McDreamy has found himself in yet another love triangle. As if the famous Grey’s Anatomy love triangle between himself, Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and Addison Sheppard/Montgomery (Kate Walsh) weren’t enough, Dempsey has found himself in an oddly parallel scenario in Valentine’s Day. Julia (Jennifer Garner) captivated by those blue eyes, falls head over heels for Dr. Copeland but knows nothing about his marriage with Pamela (Katherine LaNasa). Harrison claims he cannot spend Valentine’s Day with Julia due to a “work trip,” but in reality, has to make it home to his wife and kids before suspicions arise. The incredibly embarrassing fall out of his double life is what makes this couple—or should I say throuple—and their story one of my favorites.

High School Sweethearts: Willy Harrington and Felicia Miller

Taylor Lautner and Taylor Swift play two young and in love high school kids that have agreed to wait to have sex, but that doesn’t stop them from swapping some serious spit for the interviewers and their cameras at their after-school sports practices. This plotline is one of the smaller ones but my liking for it stems more so from the fact that this is the Taylor cross-over that 10-year-old me has always yearned for. The first time I saw the movie it was such a pleasant surprise and getting to see them play roles so out of their norms was pure entertainment.

Coming out story: Sean Jackson

Another one of Grey’s Anatomy’s beloved, Mark Sloan (Eric Dane) plays a professional football player with a secret—he’s gay. His story follows his discussion with his publicist Kara Monahan (Jessica Biel) and his agent Paula Thomas (Queen Latifa) to let go of his fame and career and find happiness in love just in time for Valentine’s Day. The contrast between his character in this movie to other characters he’s known for is very enjoyable and his coming out story, as comedic as it is, is also quite wholesome.

Writer Katherine Fugate has combined the perfect amount of romance and comedy to produce a movie of pure cinematic gold if you ask me. The plot only thickens as the puzzle pieces of love stories just beginning and ending fall into place just in time for the day of love. Now I am not sure what your Cupid Day looks like this year, but I know that mine includes hanging with my fellow single girlfriends, eating lots of ice cream and watching several romcoms, starting with my all-time favorite—Valentine’s Day
