The first film on our list that will come out in 2020 is Gretel & Hansel. This thriller-fantasy, set to be released on Jan. 31, provides a very dark twist to the classic fairy tale. According to IMDb, in an interview, director Oz Perkins mentioned that the film is “awfully faithful to the original story,” except for its focus on Gretel over Hansel as the lead protagonist. Another more eerie film to be released this year is Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man. Starring Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale, Mad Men), this psychological horror provides a fresh portrayal of the 1933 film of the same name in which a woman’s husband dies only to become invisible and torturously haunt her. This film’s release is set for Feb. 28 and is definitely not for the faint of heart.

For those who don’t enjoy horror, there are plenty of other films to come. On Feb. 12, the oh-so-anticipated sequel to a Netflix favorite, To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You, will be released for streaming. Fans think it seems to be just as cute as its predecessor but with a whole new level of drama. All is going well between Peter and Laura Jean when suddenly she receives an unexpected response from one of her letters and her world is turned upside down. Another potential Valentine’s Day flick is Downhill, starring Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, to be debuted on Feb. 14. After barely escaping an avalanche during a family vacation and choosing to save his phone over his loved ones, Pete must find a way to patch things up and save his marriage and family.

Perhaps one of the most long-awaited films to be released this year, the live-action reboot of Mulan will take to the big screen on March 27. While the overall plot of the film will stay fairly true to the 1998 animation, a few key details will be changed. According to IMDb, the creators of the film decided to stay away from the traditional musical route of other Disney reboots with the intention of creating a more mature tone and assuring that the focus is kept on the story. The cast of characters has also been switched up. For example, Mushu will not play a role in the film, while a new villain, a witch named Xian Lang, will provide a new never-before-seen challenge for Mulan. Another highly anticipated blockbuster is Black Widow. Scarlett Johansson will continue to play Natasha Romanoff, but this time alongside the up-and-coming Florence Pugh (Little Women, Midsommar) as her sister. The film is said to fill in the gaps of what the Black Widow was up to between the Marvel films Captain America: Civil War (2016) and Avengers: Infinity War (2018).

While the trailer didn’t reveal too much about its plot, Tenet was noted by IndieWire as being the most exciting movie of the year. Based on the two-minute trailer, the film seems to center around the prevention of a conflict comparable to World War III, while also incorporating espionage and time-travel. Directed by the critically acclaimed Christopher Nolan and featuring John David Washington and Robert Pattinson, Tenet will open on July 17. Another sci-fi to be released in December of this year is Denis Villeneuve’s remake of Dune – think Star Wars, but trendier. The star-studded cast is rumored to include Timothée Chalamet as its leading protagonist, as well as Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya, Jason Momoa and Oscar Isaac.

Also to be released this December is Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of the beloved 1957 musical, West Side Story. Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler will be playing Tony and Maria. Finally, with no set release date, we have Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch. While many details of the film still remain under wraps, according to IndieWire, the film will be set in 1950s Paris and, according to an interview with Anderson, it will follow an “American journalist based in France [who] creates his magazine. It is more a portrait of this man, of this journalist who fights to write what he wants to write.” The cast will feature Saoirse Ronan, Timothée Chalamet, Elisabeth Moss, Willem Dafoe, Tilda Swinton, and of course, Owen Wilson and Bill Murray.

Whether you prefer horror, drama, comedy or sci-fi, there will most certainly be a movie for you to look forward to this year.
