Hot Girl Summer: How to Still Dress Cute While Dealing With the Heat

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

I know I’m not the only one worried about my outfits for this summer. For those of you who find yourself in the same boat, here’s a guide on what I’ll be wearing (and where to shop for them) that’ll help you beat the heat.

1. Cargo pants

If there’s one article of clothing you should spend money on this summer, this is it. I’ve purchased enough cargo pants to tell you that they are typically light, breathable and perfect for the season. They are easy to build an outfit around and come in many different styles, so you can create multiple looks with even just a single pair. If you’re looking to obtain a piece for this summer, I would suggest thrifting them or buying them second-hand on Depop or ThredUp. I’ve found a large number of pairs from these sites, and it doesn’t seem like they’ll disappear anytime soon. If you’re looking for a more reliable source to purchase from, the brand Dickies has yet to disappoint me. They have multiple options for their pants and are relatively priced. Not to mention, their shipping is prompt, and you’re more likely to find your size.

2. Button-up shirts:

Button-up shirts are a great way to bring a plain outfit together while not having to worry about being too warm. These shirts can be patterned, sheer or linen. Whether long-sleeved or short-sleeved, they are simple to style and easy to find. You could style the buttoned (or unbuttoned) shirt with a cute bralette or tank top underneath, along with some solid denim pants or shorts. Shirts like these can often be thrifted as well as bought second-hand. Stores like Zara, Urban Outfitters and Target also carry a variety of button-ups.

3. A Good Set

Having a matching set is a must-have for this summer. If you’re worried about not finding one that’s glamorous enough, I assure you that the more basic, the better. A plain matching set makes it effortless to style. All you need to do is add the right accessories, and your outfit will seem more elaborate. Funky jewelry or trendy purses/shoes are smart ways to add more to your look. Matching sets can be found from brands like ASOS, H&M and Target.

4. Basic Tees/Tanks

Basic tees/tanks are the staple pieces in my closet this summer. When I say basic, I’m talking solid colors, classic textures and no intricate designs. Having basic pieces in your closet will come in handy when putting an outfit together. They allow you to create multiple variations of the summer look you want to achieve. A basic tank top can be styled with statement clothing like patterned skirts or bold tops. Conveniently, basic tees/tanks can be found at most of your local clothing stores.

5. Statement Sandals

On the days you don’t feel like dressing up, statement sandals are a summer necessity. You can dress them up or down and look great either way. Statement sandals could add a pop of color or pattern to your outfit. Basically, you’re taking a simpler outfit and turning it into a seemingly thorough one. Statement sandals match well with most clothing, so owning a pair would definitely add a lot to your summer wardrobe. If you’re interested in buying a pair, Steve Madden, ASOS and Nordstrom are popular brands that carry the item.

Summer is the perfect time to expand your wardrobe and test your style. To ensure that this summer is a Hot Girl one, let’s all consider beating the heat of the season.
