Taylor Swift Will Receive Artist of the Decade Award at the AMAs

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

As we leave October and head into November, we can start speculating and looking forward to the American Music Awards. This year’s awards show will be on Nov. 24 at 8 p.m. EST. During the show, Taylor Swift will be receiving the Artist of the Decade Award due to her contributions to the music industry and her numerous winnings. With 23 American Music Awards already under her belt, she is also nominated for Artist of the Year, Music Video of the Year, Favorite Female Artist in the pop/rock genre and Favorite Artist in the adult contemporary genre. She currently has the most AMAs of any female artist and might just break Michael Jackson’s AMA record of 24 awards. She is up against Billie Eilish and Ariana Grande for Favorite Female Artist and Music Video of the Year, two megastars in their own right. Her music video for “You Need to Calm Down” is nominated for Music Video of the Year which acts as a message to those who seek to put others down. The video stars a number of queer celebrities, from Todrick Hall to the men of Queer Eye. The only other artist to receive an Artist of the Decade Award in person was Garth Brooks at the end of the ‘90s.

Taylor Swift has had a long and illustrious career that has only kept growing over the years with each new album she releases. Her most recently released album, Lover, premiered at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 Chart and earned 867,000 album units in its first week after being released. This is the largest number for any album debut since her release of Reputation in 2017. With her sixth No. 1 album, she has had a very successful decade, which leads to her being awarded Artist of the Decade. Her album Lover is, in fact, the first album Swift has ever owned. Because her old record label, Big Machine, owns her masters, the older albums she’s recorded with them, she has stated that she wants to re-record them to gain control over her content. The Big Machine record company was sold to Scooter Braun, the long-time owner of Ithaca Holdings who manages stars such as Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber. Braun and Swift have had issues in the past and this was labeled by her as a “worst-case scenario.” After attempting to buy back her masters with no luck, she left Big Machine and is planning to re-record to finally be able to own all of her work.

Taylor Swift will be performing some of her greatest hits at the awards show. Vice President of Programming and Development at Dick Clark Studios, Mark Bracco, stated that “Taylor’s impact on music this decade is undeniable and her performances on the American Music Awards have been truly spectacular. We’re thrilled to honor her as our Artist of the Decade and can’t wait for her to blow everyone away with an epic, career-spanning performance unlike any other!”

From first loves to heartbreaks to calling out her haters, Taylor Swift has constantly changed her message and aesthetic to match what she is going through. After the revenge narrative of Reputation, her new album, Lover, about loving yourself and others, sets the tone for how she will accept one of the biggest awards of her career.
