Tallahassee: A Work in Progress

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

Even if you’re new to Tallahassee, you are more than likely already well-acquainted with the ever-present construction going on in the city. While the detours and “workers ahead” signs can be annoying, the most recent developments have been a successful addition to the area surrounding FSU’s campus. College Town and the Gaines Street District have been the center of attention in an attempt to create a go-to destination for both college students and alumni.

The revitalization project has been years in the making, and the City of Tallahassee plans to continue the development in order to create a more vibrant and bustling urban space. The completion of the first phase of the district’s project included College Town, which has already become a popular destination for students. It is comprised of luxury apartments as well as exciting nightlife, restaurants, and unique boutiques. With its location directly facing Doak Campbell Stadium, this area has become a game day mecca for fellow ‘Noles. Improvements on roadways were also an important part of the project, in order to enhance public safety (hello, new roundabout!). The Gaines Street area has always been known for its distinct artsy atmosphere, and developers have kept this in mind. Public art adorns local businesses and streets, adding a certain flair that can only be found on this side of town. Tallahassee is embracing the changes and business is thriving. But the product isn’t quite finished yet. Here’s what you can expect next!

College Town Phase II:

The success of College Town far exceeded business owner’s expectations. Due to this, it has recently been revealed that College Town Phase II is in the works. According to those involved, we can expect a grocery store, a boutique hotel, additional student housing, and more shops. Their ultimate goal is to attract even more students and young adults to the area. The haunted house on Gaines will be the new home of the Railyard at College Town. Look forward to “15,000 square feet of retail and 40 condominiums upstairs, along with an upper deck that residents can use for ‘tailgate’ parties on game days,” according to the president of Hooper Construction. But what makes this plan even better? Parking. We all know how atrocious Tallahassee traffic is, and how amazing  a feat it is to find a parking spot. Thankfully, new parking garages have been proposed. This means that there will be about 600 new parking spots. Now that is definitely something to look forward to. Work on Phase II can begin as early as March.

Garages on Gaines:

With what is to come, you’ll never want to leave the area. Why would you, when it has everything you could possibly need? Look out for Garages on Gaines, which is going to be home to Atlas Fit, Catalina Café, Gaines Street Pies (yes, they’re moving), Grasslands Brewery, and Full Press. Live music, pizza, and beer: the perfect combination for your Friday night needs (and every other day of the week). This development will undoubtedly add to the booming nightlife in the area.

The influx of local businesses and dedication to the art scene is what makes Tallahassee stand out as an innovative and thriving place to live. Make sure to check out everything that is happening in Tally, Collegiettes!
