Tallahassee Downtown Marketplace

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

I have lived in Tallahassee for almost two years now and I’m still discovering all that it has to offer. Sometimes it might seem like there isn’t much else besides the clubs, bars, and parties, but once you get off campus, you’d be surprised at how much else is going on in this town and all there is to do. So if you’re looking to take a break from studying or the bar scene, stop by the Tallahassee Downtown Marketplace which is celebrating its 20th season this year.

The marketplace is put on every Saturday between March and November by the Tallahassee Downtown Improvement Authority and the City of Tallahassee. At 9 am sharp in Ponce de Leon Park off of North Monroe Street, the marketplace is opened by the Mercat March, a group of local bagpipe players. The Mercat March may be a new tradition in the marketplace, but it is a beloved one. Once the market is open, there are a million things to explore and do. There are artists and crafters there to sell their products as well as perform and demonstrate how they make their goods. There are over 50 vendors selling anything from jewelry, to photography, to painting, to glass goods, and more. You’re sure to find a little something you’ll want to take home to display or wear. Along with the artistic goods for sale, there is a farmers’ market full of fresh and locally grown fruits and vegetables great for any recipes you want to try and also a way to support our local farmers.

If you’re looking to grab a bite after a couple hours of shopping, there are plenty of food trucks serving brunch, lunch, and sweet treats at the park. Whatever you decide to pick up, have a seat and enjoy the live music that is played between 10:30 am and 1:30 pm. Parking in the downtown area is free on weekends and there’s plenty of it available (knowing where and if you’ll be able to park is a real concern here in Tallahassee; I know, I’ve been towed twice this year). It’s free to attend the Tallahassee Downtown Marketplace, so even if you’re working with a budget like most college students, you and your friends can go enjoy the atmosphere, listen to the band, and browse the vendors’ tables.

All season long the marketplace will be having special events on certain Saturdays including poetry contests, art shows, a car and bike show, signings by local authors, and tons more around certain holidays such as Halloween. There are activities for children as well, so when your younger siblings are in town, this would be a great place to spend some time with them and the rest of your family. Located at 115 East Park Avenue across from the Doubletree, Tallahassee Downtown Marketplace is a must on your to-do list. The marketplace closes at 2 pm so be sure to give yourself enough time to see all that there is to see. See you all next Saturday!

Kelsey is a junior here at Florida State majoring in Creative Writing and double minoring in Psychology and Spanish. Kelsey hopes to graduate in December 2015 and move to Spain to teach English for a few years while exploring the continent, eating lots of yummy food, and maybe learning how to be a better dancer. After Spain she hopes to return to the US of A and get a job in publishing while she works on her novels and short stories. In her free time Kelsey enjoys reading, taking naps, watching Netflix, and exploring places she's never been. She has an odd fascination with serial killer documentaries and aquariums. She loves all things Jane Austen, even her pet fish is named after the famous Pride and Prejudice hero, Mr. Darcy. If not found in her room writing or napping, you can find Kelsey holding the nearest cute baby or wandering the aisles of Barnes and Noble.
