Late night cramming at Strozier, countless coffees from the 24-hour Starbucks, and long nights-sounds like finals time.  It can be really tough not losing your mind during this stressful time.  Here are a few tips that can help you survive finals.

  1. Manage your time wisely.  In order to get good grades you have to study.  And study some more. During finals it is very important to manage your time effectively.  Making a study schedule works for me.  I squeeze in study breaks and much needed down time.  Don’t leave studying for the night before!  Most people cannot make A’s by studying the night before, so make sure you make the most out of the days before your exam.
  2. Give your brain a break!  Don’t become overwhelmed by your text books.  Make time to take a break and think about other things besides your exam.  Visit your favorite websites, Facebook stalk your friends, and read a cool article on hercampus.com!  An hour or two for down time will ensure that you don’t over work your mind.
  3. Be good to your body.  All the stress from finals can make your immune system weaker.  Make sure you eat enough, load up on vitamin C, and always have breakfast.  You have to feed your body more than coffee.  I know the 24-hour Starbucks is very tempting but if you are getting a latte make sure you at least buy a sandwich! Also, get enough sleep.  You will not be able to retain as much if you’re tired.  Get a good night’s sleep!
  4. Find your study place.  For some people the library is too quiet, for others it is the perfect place.  Find your study place.  Make it a place with minimal distractions so you can focus on the material you are covering. There are many places to choose from at FSU. Make yourself comfortable in your chosen spot because you are going to be there for a while.
  5. Reward yourself!  Whether you make straight A’s or not, you deserve a reward for all your effort.  Treat yourself to a nice dinner, or a small shopping spree.  Get yourself something that makes you truly happy-you deserve it!
Viviana Victoria is a sophomore at the Florida State University, class of 2013, double majoring in Retail Merchandising & Product Development and the new English track offered at FSU, editing, writing, and media. Born and raised in West Palm Beach, Florida, moving up to Tallahassee was quite a change. During her first year in college, after changing her major three times, she was fortunate enough to discover her passion for writing this early on. Her goal is to write for a major fashion magazine or to be a screenplay writer in the future. She is an active member of the Collegiate Merchandising Association (CMA) at FSU, as well as a contributing writer of College Magazine, an advice publication for college students founded by a graduate student of Maryland. Some of her interests include playing sports, reading, working out, and basically having a good time. Her ultimate life goal is to touch lives and to be remembered as the girl who always made people smile regardless of what was thrown her way.
