It is almost Halloween! I’m sure as well all know, Halloween may look a little different this month because of COVID-19. Luckily, I have just the show that will keep the scary spirit in the air for you. I am not usually one to be on Netflix or other streaming services often, so when I talk about a show you know it has to be good. Without further ado, let’s get into why “The Haunting of Bly Manor” is great. I will try to avoid spoilers to the best of my abilities, but no promises.

What I love most about this show is that it is a slow burn. They do not waste your time with cheap scares. They really take the time to create a narrative that engulfs you. The more you learn about each individual’s character, the scarier it seems to get. Another beautiful thing is that the show explores multiple horrors. Not everyone is afraid of the same things and people experience fear in their own lives differently. I think that each character in this show sheds light on a different horror. One episode can dive into the scariness of commitment and love. The next can smoothly transition into the horrors of losing your mind and being forgetful. It all blends together to create this psychotic and chaotic environment. Like I said though, they do so in such a manner that it slowly adds up. If you are a fan of the paranormal, there is some of that. If you are more interested in reality, that is featured too.

The cast is pretty stellar as well. There’s a joke going around that somehow all of the cast is so good looking. I appreciate the diversity in the show. I think most of the characters get a decent amount of screen time. If anything, they all play off of each other and create a dynamic together. The location of this show is breathing taking. With a giant house and green fields, it is sure to capture your attention. I think the makeup of the ghosts and haunted creatures is good. They appear and seem real enough. Everyone’s costumes and outfits are well constructed.

Expanding on diversity, there is LGBTQ+ representation in this show. Two of the main characters enter a lesbian relationship and I honestly have no choice but to stan! The chemistry is there and enhances the show.

While I’m all for binging, I personally cannot do that. I would recommend processing this show slowly. Think about the concepts for a day and let the ideas settle in. They really give you so much to process each episode, and it is insightful.

So, there you have it. Gather your friends and open up Netflix! If you haven’t started it yet, please do because it’ll only make this Halloween season so much better. Maybe it’ll even give you some costume/character ideas. I know it has definitely been a source of entertainment for me lately. Stay well and stay haunted, ha-ha.
