We all have that one song that takes us somewhere else. More likely, there are multiple songs that can take us to a time in the past, present or future imagination. I think this is a large component of the appeal of music. People love music because songs are unique; they describe people’s very own experiences and thoughts. There are genres of music that serve different purposes. I listen to some music to think, some music to study and some music to get myself pumped for the day ahead. When I put my pencil down, these are a few of the songs that put me at ease.

“Birthday Party” by The 1975

This artist may be a middle school throwback for a lot of people (including myself), but their music is honestly timeless. They have gone through so many musical and artistic phases throughout their impressive career. Despite the lyrics, which describe some of the harsh realities Matt Healy has faced throughout his life, the song has an almost hopeful tone. The two aspects contradict each other. This track is featured on the album Notes on a Conditional Form.

“Thick and Thin” by LANY

This one may actually be one of my favorite songs of all time. Ever. I even remember the first time I listened to it. I was walking out of my freshman biology class and saw that one of my favorite bands had released a new single. Ever since then, it has been on my Spotify top 50 playlist every year. This song has a bittersweet melody that almost sounds optimistic but always ends with a sense of sorrow. This song is featured on the album Malibu Nights.

“brokenhearted – sunset” by joan

Joan is probably one of the most underrated artists right now. This duo has great vocals accompanied by catchy and melodic sounds. They do not have a large discography right now, but everything they release is pure gold. This song truly makes me feel like I am sitting at the edge of a dock overlooking the ocean. It is featured on the album partly cloudy.

“Softcore” by The Neighbourhood

We all know this band for their iconic song “Sweater Weather” that played on radio stations for months on end (and probably still does). All of their albums have an eclectic sound featuring Jesse Rutherford’s unique vocals. This song has a more upbeat rhythm, but it makes me feel like cruising down a highway in the summer sun and going on a picnic. It is featured on the album Hard To Imagine The Neighbourhood Ever Changing.

“Moon River” by Frank Ocean

Known for his debut album channel ORANGE Frank Ocean really knows how to make his listeners dance, cry and think. This song has such amazing vocals accompanied by a soft melody in the background. It is one of his more recent singles that does not belong to an album. His album Blonde from 2016 was so greatly anticipated and well worth the wait. This track is featured on many of my playlists and is a must-listen.
