Is Something Actually Wrong or Is Mars Just in Retrograde?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

Let me guess. You woke up this morning still tired. You bailed on your workout this afternoon. You have probably been nursing the same headache for the last three weeks. How did I know that you may ask? Well, this morning I snoozed my alarm that was set for 10 am and have been surviving off the sheer willpower of caffeine and Advil ever since. I feel it too. It’s no coincidence that we’ve all lost momentum at the same time. There’s only one explanation—And it’s Mars.

Mars began its retrograde trip around the sun on Sept. 9, and it has been a bumpy ride for the rest of us ever since. Mars’s solar system symbol is identical to the male gender symbol. In the astrology community, this means that Mars dominates all of the “masculine traits” in our lives. These traits, including anger, competition, desire and sex are at high risk during Mars’s retrograde period. As a result, Mars’s retrograde motion may have an influence on your temper, your sex drive and sometimes even the accomplishments that you are attempting to achieve. It’s likely that you’ve been getting easily angry, or have been doubting yourself in your efforts to achieve your recent goals. This is especially bad news for Aries and Scorpios, whose zodiac signs are ruled by Mars. Aries and Scorpios tend to feel the effects of a Mars retrograde much stronger than the rest.

Coming from a fellow Scorpio, I recognize that the struggle has indeed been real. There’s been a lack of motivation on all fronts and on multiple occasions, I have found myself shying away from tasks that I once had significant confidence in my ability to do. Of course, a Mars retrograde was the last thing 2020 needed. There is no doubt that we were already lacking motivation and facing a great deal of frustration before Mars started causing conflict in these areas.

However, to the Aries and the Scorpios (and the rest of you who are facing the repercussions of Mars’ backward motion), fear not. There have been multiple instances in recent months where I have canceled a workout or avoided my responsibilities and merely blamed it on the poor fate bestowed on me by the planets. I’ve noticed, however, that the key is not to shy away from the retrograde, but rather use it to my advantage. Mars’ retrograde is a perfect time for a reset. In this period, self-care is of the utmost importance. We must find time for relaxation, especially when our physical states are begging us to do so. This is the perfect time for indulging in leisurely activities without feeling guilty for doing so. During this self-care, we’re able to spend time alone and learn what habits we react to best. We may be lacking the confidence and the passion we normally have to achieve certain goals, but Mars’ retrograde allows us the free-time to map out our next steps. We can organize, plan and prepare for the end of Mars’ retrograde.
