She Did What?: The Whole Debacle Behind Kylie Jenner’s Recent Donation

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

Kylie Jenner is consistently at the forefront of headlines for her various cosmetic companies and display of her lavish lifestyle but recently Jenner received major backlash on social media after sharing a GoFundMe link about one of her former makeup artists, Samuel Rauda. The latter was involved in a serious accident which reportedly left him with $60,000 to pay in medical bills. His family created a GoFundMe as a way to help alleviate the expensive costs, which Jenner decided to share on her Instagram story. She posted an image of Rauda with a “swipe up” link to the donation page and wrote, “may God watch over you and protect you.” Fans were left confused as to why the page was shared in the first place, due to her billionaire status.

According to Forbes, Kylie Jenner was the highest-paid celebrity of 2020, with an estimated 900 million as her net worth. For reference, it was estimated that Jenner racks in approximately $19,000 every 60 minutes which adds to her earnings to around $450,000 in one single day. Many people took note of the title she received last year and used it to forward their argument across all social media platforms, especially when it was revealed that she donated $5,000. Within hours after the original Instagram story, screenshots were already taken and the situation spread like wildfire.

Many people from all over were voicing their own opinions about this matter. It created a buzz across the internet for a few days after it was originally posted on March 14. Articles were being written up, quick tweets started a conversation amongst peers and even TikToks were created, reacting to the nature of this situation. Mostly everyone came to a consensus to question why Jenner was asking her 222 million followers on Instagram to donate their own money to a fund that she can pay off herself. Based on the metric mentioned previously, many spoke up about how roughly three hours of Jenner’s income would’ve paid Raud’s bills in full.

Most people were initially concerned with the amount Jenner donated in contrast to the cost of Rauda’s bills because of the luxury purchases that she posts on her pages. People went as far as to mention Jenner purchasing a Hermès purse for her daughter Stormi that was worth around $15,000. Other celebrities including Bella Thorne and Bebe Rexha, who are also clients of Samuel Rauda, donated $5,000 and $2,500 respectively. The founder of Huda Beauty, Huda Kattan, donated $10,000 which is more than Jenner’s initial donation.

Eventually, Jenner decided to clear up the air and wrote up a clarification regarding the whole situation. In a new Instagram story, she stated that “it’s important for [her] to clear up this false narrative that [she] asked fans for money and not paying for [her] makeup artist’s medical bills.” She later mentioned that Rauda no longer works for her anymore and they do not have a personal relationship. Jenner also revealed that the original goal for the GoFundMe page was $10,000 and $6,000 was already raised before she founded the page herself. As of right now, Rauda’s GoFundMe has raised around $101,000 with a goal of $120,000.
