Roommate Horror Stories: That Witch of a Roommate!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

Happy Halloween, ‘Noles! In honor of this super-spooky-fun holiday, we thought we’d share some horror stories. These aren’t your typical ghost hauntings, though. They’re worse…so much worse. These are the scary, gruesome, skin-curdling, nauseating, creepy, aggravating, nightmarish, daunting, eerie, scream inducing, and all together horrifying stories of roommates who did not get along! Kaitlyn and I interviewed fellow Seminoles and Her Campus writers to get the most, let’s just say interesting, stories! Enjoy!

“My freshman year, I lived in DeGraff Hall. When I got my roommate assignment, we found each other on Facebook, but she showed no interest in getting to know me. I arrived at FSU for move-in on the earliest possible day, but my roommate was MIA for almost a week. I think she moved in on the second day of classes when she briefly greeted me. Then she asked me to help her with her things without a ‘please’ or ‘thank you.’ Little did I know that this MIA thing was going to be a trend; I virtually had no roommate that entire semester! She would come and go as she pleased—usually with two weeks in between visits. She would only come to our, or rather MY, room to get more clothes or drop clothes off. The privacy was marvelous, but I missed the companionship my other friends were developing with having a real-life roommate.”

“The first weekend of my first fall semester at FSU I went home because my friend was driving – she offered for me to come along and I obliged. Two days later, I came back to find my side of the room disheveled and a complete mess and not how I had left it at all. After confronting my roommate, I later found out that she had slept in my bed after a night of partying! She claimed she was “drugged” and couldn’t sleep in her own bed. To this day I know it was because she didn’t know how to handle her alcohol. On another occasion, my roommate had asked to borrow a shirt of mine (one that was brand new, tags still on and everything) which I didn’t have a problem with. I let her borrow it and a few days later, found it stuffed in the back of my closet, ripped into shreds. It was so destroyed I had to throw it away.”

“One time, I didn’t wash ONE dish that I left in the sink because I was late for class. I was living with someone I had met in a class, and she was so flipping OCD about dishes! She made a plate of cookies and wrapped them in saran wrap. On the plate she had left a sticky note saying ‘Only good roommates get baked goods.’ After, she started leaving other passive-aggressive notes around the apartment: “We are trying to keep the place clean—get with the program!” or “Here’s the chore list for the week! Don’t forget it!” I only left ONE dish! ONE DISH! She also proceeded to take over any party we had, even if she originally said she wanted no part in it. She was like a parent; she wanted everyone to bring food and limit their drinking.”

“Freshman year, my teammate walked in on her roommate having sex with her boyfriend in the middle of the day.”

“My freshman year roommate in Salley Hall was the most disgusting person I had ever met. She would leave her feminine hygiene products exposed and laying around the bathroom. It smelled so bad! She never washed her sheets, so her bed was tinted brown with dirt. Her desk overflowed with food and garbage over to my desk, causing bugs to crawl all over. The nastiest thing she ever did was poop while my other roommate was taking a shower. (There was one bathroom for four girls with only one toilet and one shower!) She didn’t see anything wrong with this, but after countless meetings with our RA, she finally moved out. First, though, she wrote a blog about how I was ‘mentally traumatizing’ her and things that had never happened like…how I hit her and yelled at her every time I saw her. In truth, I only told her that she was gross and rude!”

So, there you have them! We hope these stories didn’t scare you too much, but we’re sure a few pieces of trick-or-treat candy will calm your nerves. Don’t feel like dressing up? Curl up with your roommates and watch The Roommate (or any other scary movie!) Can’t get enough horror? Maybe you’ll get lucky with Roommate Horror Stories: Part 2! Mwahaha!

Kaitlyn Hatten is curently a junior at Florida State University majoring in Family and Child Sciences/ Child Development. She recently started taking yoga classes but still enjoys teaching herself music video choreography in her bedroom. She idolizes pop artist Demi Lovato and strives to be her (or her best friend) one day. Some may consider her a "crazy cat lady" but it's really all animals that bring joy to her life. If she was filmed on a daily basis and had her life turned into a television show, it would have a little bit of comedy, romance, action... actually, no action, just comedy. Overall, she's just a goof-ball with a big heart!
Elana Pollack, of Vero Beach, FL,  is currently a junior at Florida State University studying English; Editing, Writing, and Media.  While she loves this field, her dream job is to manage a performing arts center.  Elana has a younger brother and sister whom she adores.  Since graduating high school, she has spent every summer working at a camp in North Carolina.  She has seen every Gilmore Girls episode at least three time and still watches every re-run.
Kalie Marsch is a senior at Florida State University majoring in Editing, Writing and Media within the College of English. She aspires to work in magazine publishing and editing in the future, and lives for New York Fashion Week. When she's not busy with work or school, she loves to shop, read magazines and online style blogs, sit down with a good book, or go to the gym. She is obsessed with New York City and plans to move there after graduating from college. Kalie also loves being involved on campus and meeting new people. She is super excited to work with Her Campus and looks forward to helping make the FSU chapter the best it can be!
