At this time of the year, it can suck to be single. Hell, at any time of the year being single seems to have its downfalls – or so I thought, until I learned how to be single. How To Be Single is a hilarious depiction of a young adult’s love life. It goes beyond the worn out clichés of your standard rom-com chick flick, and opts for a more contemporary and honest take on today’s “romance.” The plot features a true, yet comedic view on hook-up culture, rejection, hangovers, online dating, baby making and, of course, relationships.

As I mentioned, this movie is primarily geared toward young adults; the ones who are always in relationships, the ones who are flat out against relationships, and the ones who don’t even consider dating because they’re having too much fun on their own. Whether you are an expert one-night-stander, or have an alarming LTRP, which I refuse to spoil the meaning of, this film has a relatable character for everyone.

The movie presents high-profile actresses such as Dakota Johnson, Rebel Wilson, Leslie Mann and Alison Brie in a modern-day New York City to create a sort of Sex and the City vibe. Johnson, known as Alice in the film, is a young woman fresh out of college who wants to know what it’s like to be single for her first time in four years, but isn’t entirely ready to give up the security of a relationship.  Her new friend, Robin (Rebel Wilson), sister, Meg (Leslie Mann), and a handful of other characters help her along her journey toward discovering what she truly wants out of her life.

The comedic relief of the movie is probably what makes it so compelling; following every serious moment, there is a reason to laugh. While the film centers on a plot that predominantly underscores the protagonist’s journey to “find herself,” it puts a heavy emphasis on comedy between amusing dialogue and hysterical turn of events.

The producers of How To Be Single did an incredible job in communicating that being single has its perks. Even though it can be rough at times, it gives you some much needed time to figure out who you are, to learn how to love yourself, and, of course, to sleep with whomever you want.

Personally, this movie changed my outlook on my lacking love life. This is the time in our lives that we can freely dedicate toward creating ourselves and accomplishing our goals- even my friends who accompanied me to the movie, both who are in long-term relationships, left the theater wishing they too were single.
