Remembering Ryen Aleman: After Surviving the Jacksonville Tragedy He Lost His Life in a Car Accident

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

“Just enjoying what I love to do God gave me a second life and I’m enjoying it every single minute. Nobody knows when you can be gone, just enjoy life and always do what you love.” This is what Aleman said after having survived such a horrible incident. Only 22 days later to be killed in a car accident.

On Sunday, September 16, 2018, Ryen Aleman was taken, at the mere age of 25 after surviving the Jacksonville Mass Shooting. The mass shooting occurred during a Madden NFL tournament in Jacksonville, Fla on Sunday, August 26, 2018. During the event, Aleman heard firing sounds, so he suggested to his opponent that they seek refuge in the bathroom, by standing on the toilet seats, so that they wouldn’t be found. Ryen Aleman and his family believed “he was the luckiest guy in the world,” after surviving such a tragedy in the Jacksonville Madden Tournament.

Less than a month later, Aleman died in a car accident this past Sunday.

Today we remember Ryen Aleman and all he has suffered. It has been reported that Aleman died due to his vehicle overturning several times. His car then crashed into nearby railroad tracks. The crash was more severe because Aleman wasn’t wearing his seatbelt during the time of his accident. It is clear he was ejected from the car, but the accident is being further investigated to ensure foul play wasn’t present in the crash, August 26, 2018.

His family released a statement saying, “He was a survivor of the Jacksonville shooting at the Madden tournament and we were beyond blessed that he was okay and still here with us, but not even a month later, our Lord decided to call him home,” the page states. “He was loved by his family and his friends, the happiest, funny, and the easiest person to get along with … We are hoping to raise money to give him a proper burial that he deserves.”
