Remember Why You Started

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

At the intersection of “what is” and “what can be” lie our stories. It’s where decisions are made and lives are ultimately defined. Which way you decide to go can mean everything. If you go left, if you stick with what you’re comfortable with, you will not grow. Even if what you’re comfortable with doesn’t make you happy, you let the fear of the unknown prohibit you from making a change. But, if you have the courage to go right, you are opening yourself up to an infinite amount of possibilities to grow, to consistently work towards reaching your highest level of self-actualization.

Starting fresh is always the hardest part. Not having the slightest clue of what awaits you down a new path can be frightening. Sticking with what you have grown used to, despite it being boring, feels safe. This path has minimal upside and minimal downside; it is proven and tangible. Latching on to what we’re comfortable with is something we have grown accustomed to. We don’t realize how detrimental that can be when it comes to expanding our horizons and reaching for higher goals.

What we often fail to remember is that once we recognize our desire to improve and explore, whether it be physically or emotionally, we already possess the necessities needed to accomplish those goals. What stops us is fear. The mere concept of having to put yourself in a place where you know little to nothing causes you to retreat back to your comfort zone. We don’t push ourselves hard enough because we are pre-conditioned to stay within boundaries. There is this misconception that fear is always bad, but, if your dream doesn’t scare you, then it is not strong enough to change you.

Let fear be the fuel you need to do better. No matter what you wish to accomplish, if you have the audacity to dream then you have the means to succeed. Remember why you wanted to go on this journey in the first place. Yes, the road less traveled is the road less traveled because of the fear associated with it, but, if you work hard and keep the goal in mind, you will yield so many rewards. These struggles that are pulling you back are going to launch you even more forward than before.

Each day is a new beginning. Each day has the potential to be something great. Each day poses the opportunity to turn around and go down the right path. No matter where you are or what you believe you are capable of, if you choose to stay within your comfort zone, regret will always linger in the back of your mind, constantly reminding you of what could have been.

Have the audacity to want better for yourself. Have the audacity to deny anyone that is not willing to offer you all that you deserve. Have the audacity to be bold, strong, passionate and confident. Have the audacity to go right, to go down a path that offers love, freedom, and positivity. Go down the path that leads you to a brighter future.
